The North is trying to show strength during the transition of power from one Dictator to his son, an heir apparent (Kim Jong Il).
They have often traded shots with the South over these same military exercises in the past.
It's the most provocative and heaviest attack by far, since the ceasefire was signed.
It could get a lot worse, let's hope something can be worked out, or hello WW3

                                                                                                                 <S> Oz
it wont be WWIII. China has already told North Korea that it will not get involved in any of its military affairs anymore. and China's economy is dependant on the US now so i doubt they will fight us if we had to back South Korea up in armed conflict...

For the sake of america lets hop not. They will destroy us

Just because they have enough soldiers to form a human bridge across the entire Pacific AND invade the continental US, doesn't mean they will.

whats wrong?  you dont take a shining to being destroyed?  I got news for ya pard, being destroyed is a risk this country has been taking since the 1960s.  the fact that we would retaliate and destroy any nation that attempted to destroy us is whats kept the planet alive ever since.

China would be devastated beyond measure if a few thousand US nuclear missile strikes landed there.  I personaly would recommend taking out their 13 largest hydo electric dams.  That act alone would send them back to the 18th century, which in China at that time was equivalent to within a few hundred years B.C.

China has expressed multiple times they will not back up NK.  In fact the Chinese don't like the North Koreans at all they sneak across the borders into china just the Mexicans do here.  Except it is funnier when they get deported back to North Korea because they get executed.  And you can bet that North Korea will get away with this.

In 2005 the U.S. revised its declared nuclear political strategy, the Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations, to emphasize the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons preemptively against an adversary possessing weapons of mass destruction or overwhelming conventional forces. Whether the Single Integrated Operational Plan ("SIOP") has been revised accordingly is uncertain, but possible.  This could include a preemptive strike against China if it appeared they were readying their nuclear forces for attack.

Calling for anything less than a millitary (air) strike in retaliation for this agression against our ally does not get it.

We can't allow the lives of our allies anywhere to be taken by hostile action from an agressor nation.
We've made treaties with them, treaties that lay out our obligations to them and theirs to us. Just as we are bound to defend a NATO ally we are bound to defend them.

South Korea is our faithful ally. They sent the 2ndlargest contingent of troops to Vietnam to help us (a few divisions). South Korea was our ally in their own war. South Korea has been a shining example of the failure of the system in North Korea and it part of the reason that China is now a capitalist success story :aok  NK can't stand it.

If we let this aggression pass with some soft words we will only look weak in the eyes of such aggressive nations (enemy and ally) and loose the influence we need to make peace in other places.

it was already let past. NK sank a SK warship with far greater loss of life. Only difference is this time there's footage of a few shells landing on SK territory.

The only thing that will ever bring down NK is to simply seize all its merchant ships when outside their territorial waters..that will instantly collapse the only economy they have to sustain their military. This of course is added to the complete stop of all foreign aid, assets on foreign banks, etc.

You'd only need to take out one of their hydroelectric dams, the Three Gorges Dam.

1. Do you think north korea would utilize nuclear weapons, or are they more likely to just use them as a leverage tool?

2. Would another nuclear power retaliate  with their own nuclear attack?

3. American troops being deployed to south korea?

4. if so, impact on war in middle east?

Southern Asian Treaty organization would back S. Korea for firsts. second, Obama is pulling out of Afghanistan in 2011. third, china doesnt want war due to the fact that the world would stop them. fourth, Kim jong Il is crazy so he probably would use nukes... fifth. we'd back up S. Korea no matter what due to the fact that we have a treaty saying we would.

Well as it stands it appears SK was conducting a military exercise in this area and firing into NK territory (albeit water). So who is the aggressor? And do your comments still stand given that they would support that NK should have retaliated as it did?

The South were conducting military manouvers near the border.  During them some shells were fired into the ocean into disputed waters.  The north told them to stop and they didn't....so the North fired a bunch of barrages at a South Korean island killing a few SK Marines and some civilians.

Scary stuff...

Actually they did not say to stop. The South had informed the north that they would be holding live fire exercises in that area. Nothing was said by the north. During the execises the north lobbed around 100 shells into military and civilian areas. The north claimed they were reacting to military agression.

If someone like Russia or Iran started live firing exercises within US waters do you guys think you'd just sit there with your fingers up your backside?
