Good things happen when I dump the AMD K6-2
« on: February 01, 2001, 02:08:00 PM »
I know wasn't much of an upgrade...I was wandering around a computer show a few weeks ago and PC133 RAM was $51 for 128mb.  So, I bought 2.  I also found a Slot 1 motherboard for $49 and a Intel P2 450mhz for $80 (Slot 1) and voila, an el-cheapo machine that I figured would go to use on one of my servers.

You see, I'm planning on building a new AMD Athlon machine, probably the 1.2ghz when prices ease back a bit.  But with those parts sitting here, I said what the hell and built the P2 450

Stuck 256mb in it and yanked my old machines parts into it.  SB AWE64 card, AGP Voodoo3 3000 card and the whole bit.  Took the better part of the evening and a zillion reboots for my Windows 98 to see the new PC Bridges and such of the new motherboard.  But, WOW, what an improvement.

Fired up Aces High and was immediately greeted with some NICE frame rates all over the place.  Usually it goes as low as 3 back in the K62 days but last night, I didnt see anything lower than 19.  Saw as high as 54 as well.

So, if you guys are trodding away with an AMD K62 cpu, check around for the old P2 or slower P3's.  For a bit over $200 I have built enough of a machine to cure my cravings for a bit.

Just thought I'd share that with you guys...while the AMD K62 sure served me well, its weaker FPU was clearly holding me back on Aces and other games.

The whole K6 series FPU is just WAY to weak to play any DX game with acceptable framerates.  On the other hand, the K7 Athlon series has the best FPU of any of the available processors today.  (That includes the P4; which is a piece of junk.)
