Need input On Satillate connection
« on: April 05, 2001, 12:04:00 AM »
Hiya everyone,

I have tried so many times to find a DSL but sadly for me I dont qualify for fast access such as Cable or DSL.  I have it in my town but too far from CO.  I am currently looking at satillate connection.  IS this any good for gaming ??  Please give some input on the subject.

Thank You

Bash

NO! it is AWFUL for gaming, satellite connections have VERY VERY VERY high latency, your ping to almost anywhere would be well over 500.  Thats why satellite connections are often referred to as "porn connections" because thats about all they are good for.

You would have a better connection with a 28.8k moden than you EVER will with satellite.

Heya Bash...I think Creamo is currently using a satellite connection, but he's on vaca for the next week or so.  When he comes back, I'll point out your thread to him.

I have starband hooked up, it is not good for on line games.  First up speed is half or less of down speed and pings (for me) varied from 175 to 900.  I use a dialup forced to 33.3 and get acceptable game play with it.
I have tested globalstar full time 2 way isdn and it is acceptable also ... BUT it is $1.49 a minute for air time.  I live in the sticks in Northern New Mexico and just found out I could get land isdn, Skuzzy says that this is the next best thing if you can not get dsl or cable.
Maybe if we could get skuzzy to wire a satellite receiver directly to his servers connecting to AH it would help the latency   (That's a pun son)
hope this helps.

Wobble: Never say never. 10 years ago most of us never dreamed starlight connections would even be available to the average guy.  Me thinks 10 years from now we will be telling stories about the "old" days when all we had was cable

Its a porn dish, and for downloading other large files. It downloads like all hell, but the ping is like 100 worse than modem.

HAng out for DSL or cable. BEsides, a 56K modem is ideal for AH.

The Dish is not a option for online gaming Im sorry to say.
