possible solution for crashes ...
« on: April 09, 2001, 07:55:00 AM »
at least it seems to work on my setup (AMD Athlon 1Ghz, VIA KT-133 chipset, GeForce2 MX) ;
reinstall latest VIA drivers (4-in-1 4.29v from www.viatech.com)  and for the "AGP vxd" part choose 'normal' install, not 'turbo' !!
haven't had a crash all Sunday ... and i can now also load the Norway terrain, which used to trash the graphics and then crash (every time).

what it effectively does is change AGP mode to '1x', while turbo is 4x ...

I've had several lock ups over the past week, my latest fix suggested by HT was to disable the Video Bios Cache in my bios...so far 3 hours without a lock up.

Goner, that does resolve many issues, but there is a better way.  VIA chipset users should install in turbo mode, but then in the bios or another method, limit AGP to 2x.  This won't be as large a hit to performance as going to AGP 1x.

i can only set 'AGP aperture size' in my bios, not the 'mode' ...
there's a utility PowerStrip (www.entechtaiwan.com) thats shows 'AGP mode' in it's diagnostics where you can probably also set it, but that's $30 ...
i downloaded it and will see if it works in the demo version.

This won't be as large a hit to performance as going to AGP 1x.

i haven't really noticed a performance hit ; in AH framerate is still in the high 50's ...

found it !!
to set AGP mode 2x, you need to edit the registry. see :

you can shut down GeForce Tweak, the FAQ says it doesn't have to be active. changes to the registry are kept after you close it.

what's Winfast ? thought that was a range of vid-cards from LeadTek ?

It's the SB live junk.  I just disabled all of that on my system by running msconfig.

I concur with that bloom25.

The best way to get around all SBLive issues (which will probably solve 99% of the problems with a computer system) is to use the basic drivers from the Creative Live website and not even bother with loading the software from the CD.
This eliminates that god awful panel they install.  I could go tinto a rather lengthy description of all the DLL's that either get hooked or replaced by the SBLive software, but it would be rather boring reading.
Suffice it to say, that panel hooks/replaces things in the OS that should not be touched by an application.
Getting rid if it is not very easy either.  I made the error of allowing this garbage to get installed and it took me 3 days of work, with a lot of hand copying of DLL's and EXE files, plus registry work to clean it all out.
Cratinve Labs is out of control.

Yep, I have got to get me one of those new Hercules Game Theater XP things.

Only problem is, I think it will be best if I flatten the box instead of trying to remove all the SBLive crap.  I don't want to do all that work... I'm too lazy.
