and the sad thing is that this is becoming more frequent with Hunter Related shootings. Just prior to the season starting there was a Game Warden shot and killed out in the Pittsburgh Area for doing his Job. Busted a Slob Poacher and then the Slob turned around and killed him. First time in 15 years I have not gone out in the woods to hunt, and the sad thing is I don't miss it. I used to be an avid archer and always looked forward to Archery season. who knows maybe when my 4 year old gets to mentor Age I may get back into but til then he is having fun driving my tanks here in the game the Same way his Great-Grandfather did for Our country during WW2.

We just had a guy have his deer stolen. Shot it, filled his tag and went to get his son to help drag it out of the woods and when he got back to were the deer was and someone had dragged it out of the woods and drove off.

Father-in-law got two 8 pointers out at the farm.
Buddy got a 5 pointer and a doe.
Buddy got a doe.
Buddy was tracking a 15 (he thinks) pointer.
Buddy got a 7 pointer.
Melvin got a buzz.

This is the local tally that I can remember for firearm deer season. Bow season is upon us now, but I won't hunt with one as my skill level isn't high enough.
Went to camp today to shut the water off. Plenty of ice for fishing. Gonna try and roust up the gang for a Ice Fishin Derby this week or next.

I thought that you couldn't shoot does- are these accidental shootings or is there something that I'm missing?

Most states you can shoot does. Some are seprate season antlered season first then antlerless. In PA in different zones its buck or doe but shotgun only. You can only take 1 antlered deer regardless of the season ( archery,muzzle,rifle/shotgun) but in the shotgun zone, as long as you have the tags you can shoot multiple does.

I was confused about the 2 8pointers by one person, although, if he owns the farm and its crop damages then its possible. ( thats the only way in PA that you can take 2 antlered deer in a season )

That being said im not sure about the laws in his state, they seem to be different everywhere

Good luck in the fishing derby....show em whos who  :aok

One other question, stopping power.

I've read that a weapon needs to have a certain amount of stopping power in order to be used in hunting (so as not to torture the animal by slowly tearing it apart), but how do the game wardens know if you shot the deer with your .308 or your .22?  Can you only take one weapon to hunt with?

If you're caught out with deer hunting gear, license, etc., and a gun that is not legal to hunt with, then you will face whatever penalties that state has set up for that offense.  You don't even have to be caught shooting anything, just being out in the season with what appears to be hunting gear is enough to get nailed.

In some states, you can hunt deer with .223 but pretty much nothing smaller.  There are a ton of other rules which is why even if someone is exempt from the hunter safety course in a particular state, they probably ought to attend a course anyhow just to brush up on the applicable laws.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

You can get a "combo" tag here which allows you to shoot 1 buck and one doe, or 2 bucks. The second buck must have 3 points on one side. Hence the two 8 pointers.

Personally, I won't lift my rifle if I don't see 8 points or more. Maybe this is why I don't drag one home every year.

It is illegal here to hunt with a .22 or smaller (rimfire). It is legal to hunt with .223 etc. I hunt with a .30-06.

Edit:Gotta track Brandon down and see if he smacked that 15 pointer.

No .22s here. Trust me when i say they will know. I use an arrangement of guns  Rifle zone either my .308 or my .270 PA law is manual operated only, no semi autos.  In the shotgun zone i use a 12ga (Benelli M1 )

I've got too many guns.

I used a Remington 700 .300 Mag all of last year.  This year, after deciding the .300 Mag was a little overkill, I went back to using my Springfield 1903 .30-06.  My grandfather bought the Springfield in the 60s...everything was original on it until he cut the barrel down a few inches and put a Monte Carlo stock and a scope on it.
