Although most of us realise that AH is but a game, abeit a really good game, there are times when a normally rational person upon being shot down by his fellow virtual brother or sister yells loudly and long the words Dweeb, Fek, Bastage and other modified profanities designed to outwit the ever present langauge filter.  

These gems course thru the arteries of the AH servers like globules of cloying cholesterol, using valuable bits n bytes which would otherwise be transporting those nifty check 6 calls, or a couple of <S>'s and the occasional GK.


Anyhow, few excerpts from real pilots on their experiences flying WW2.

Group Captain Peter Matthews
Flying Officer No 1. Sqd, Northolt

"I remember one attack we made, we went in head-on.  We wanted to get higher and avoid any fighters and shoot down the bombers from that position, but could'nt gain the height in the time.  So we made a head-on attack on a bunch of 110's - we were very successful and must have shot down 3 or 4."


Flt LT Robert Stanford Tuck

"I flew straight ahead of them as fast as possible and then turned and fired at the number two E/A (enemy Aircraft).  After passing close of the top of the E/A and pulling straight up.  I observed that he had gone straight into the water with a terrific splash. (Up till this time, I had only been hit in the wings and through the left side of the perspex on the windscreen.)

I then flew straight ahead again to attack the E/A that was left.  Just when I opened fire on this head-on attack."

"The main strength of the Me 110 was the two 20mm cannons and four machine guns in its nose.  I pressed the firing buttons and bullets flew like water out of a watering can towards the enemy.  The closing speed was high,  and at the last minute both I and my attacker had to break away to avoid a head on collision."

I had just taken off from 43 in the Baltic in a very heavy F4U-D, 3/4 int fuel, 2k bombs and rockets and met up nose to nose with a 109 on the deck being pursued. Needless to say we both had no choice but to HO.

I received two suprizes: 1. I survived it, 2. the 109 pilot (who didn't) typed "sorry about the ho" on channel one. <S> NICET, you're a class act.

it realy pisses me off when some one calls you a DWEEB cause you fly a good plane in aces high. when the people that call you a dweeb know roadkill about the plane. i doubt they realy ever have actualy been in the plane FLYING it(OR EVEN FIGHTING IT IN), how would they know the real flight preformance. just shut up!!!! you bunch of babys....oh yeah once you get in MA no one there to boot the people vulching u. but u probably knew that,,,,,, right?

Hos are perfectly fine,... I consider it less sporty of the fellow trying to go for an easy kill, or for the quick 1 shot kill, but thats his perogitive(sp)?  ;)

Id prefer (considering this is a game) to fight my opponent in order to achieve the kill.  

Somtimes Hos are nessarry though, maybe ho's are not even Hos, but rather Front quater snap shots, but this all depends on the situation.

Just know that, it DOES take 2 to make an HO happen 99.9999 percent of the time ;-)

usually you can just avoid with lead/lag turn
or barrel roll  :D

I personally try to avoid giving and receiving HO's unless my options are nill. I prefer to dogfight as it brings me better enjoyment trying to outmanuver another pilot weather they are in a better plane or not. I guess it all comes down to the situation, if we're trying to capture a base, i'll vulch till the sheep come home. When i'm flying to have fun, i'll play with my food before being killed by it  :D
All in all it's a fun game for me and I enjoy the company the most, and yes I do get PO'd on occasion, it's human nature to want to survive. I have 4 joysticks in the trash bin if you're wondering, and my parrot now has a nervous condition when AH screen comes online.  :D
I get over the anger quick and insanity soon wraps it's warm blanket over me with a soothing calming effect. Then, I grab another plane and fly again hehe.
In all serious tho, my admiration, and prayers goto those boys who had to endure the real thing and were never able to "grab" another plane after being taken to the ultimate "Tower". <<S>>

For me there is nothing more annoying than, after carefully gaining an advantage and getting an opponent into an inferior position, I allow the low E opponent to get a HO, accept it, and get killed.  

Whenever this happens, I kick myself mentally, because I could have avoided the HO with a simple roll or kick of the rudder.

What do they say? Oh yes,  "It takes two to tango."

Gradually I am learning to avoid them.  And for anybody else like me who always seems to lose, or for those who don't like to roll the dice, then I would suggest they do the same.

Whining about it is stupid.  When you make the decision to accept it, then you have to accept the consequences.

I HO when I think I should and I avoid it when I think I shouldn't HO.

When I fly the Mossie you better bet I'm going to HO anybody who wants to.  Its not like it'll out manuver them.

Mosquito FB.MkVI fully laden: 49.295 lbs/square foot
P-47D25: 48.667 lbs/square foot
P-51B-5NA: 42.06 lbs/square foot
Mosquito FB.MkVI with 50% fuel and no ordinance: 41.365 lbs/square foot
Ki-61-I-KAIc: 30.42 lbs/square foot
A6M5b: 26.38 lbs/square foot

With 4 Hispano MkII cannon in the nose you'll not want to HO this thing.
