New computer
« on: December 05, 2010, 12:34:17 PM »
ok so i plan on getting a new computer (desktop) for xmas here soon. it has a 4GB ram, 750GB memory, and like a ATI 4200 graphics card. i belive its dual core. my question is, if i have all the graphics up at the highest texture, the most advanced on the graphics detail when you pull up the clipboard, what will the FR be with out vsync on to? currently i have a laptop with a ATI3200 graphics card and 2GB ram, and 250GB memory. when i put the graphics to default and have 2096 texture the FR is about 22 without the vsync, with lag here and there. i am really excited for the new computer just need some details from someone who has similar or better computer. Thanks and <S>

I don't think even a 4200 will allow you to max out your settings.  If FR is under the monitors refresh rate (usually 60) then vsync doesn't do anything.

I strongly feel that you'll have a much better flying experience by decreasing your video settings in order to maintain 50+FPS.  You might have to go to 512 and maybe even 256 textures to accomplish this, but I see no advantage to sacrificing FR for a higher texture setting.

Have you read my GRAPHICS GUIDE?

With even the new system specs (without knowing the exact CPU, etc) I think you'll need to run 512 textures, No AA, No Shadows, and detail sliders about 2/3 of the way to "detail" to maintain a decent FR (50+).

Red, if it's a brand name PC, post the make and model number and I'm sure you'll get plenty of info.

ATI4200 sounds like perhaps an onboard graphics solution...

As a matter of fact, on Newegg the 'lowest' 4000 series video card I can find is the 4350.  There ARE motherboards on the other hand that have the 4200 built in.

So if I'm correct that the ATI 4200 graphics is 'built in' on the Motherboard, then don't expect spectacular performance with Aces High (or any other modern game for that matter).

I guess it comes down to

1> How much money you plan on spending (or how much is being spent on you for xmas)
2> What exactly you plan to accomplish with this system
3> What do you prefer?  Eye candy or Frame rate?

To be frank, a FR of 22 just plain out sucks.  I would personally rather turn off some of the candy to get a higher FR number.  Obviously you're going to get better performance out of a desktop with a built in 4200 chip vs a laptop with a 3200 chip... but still DON'T EXPECT MIRACLES.

Even on the new system you're expecting, I wouldn't plan on being able to run hi resolution textures...

ya i want a little of both. I wont have the graphics set all the way up, but just high enough that the FR is reasonable for me( no lag), thats my main concern. Before on my laptop i could run around 100 FR, but recently i had a huge program downloaded to it like word something and some virus attacks, so FR went from really good to really bad with alot of lag with the lowest graphic settings ive ever ran. :( im really lookin forward to this new comp comin in
