my great uncle, John C. Hunsinger of the Medical Detachment 26th Infantry Regiment 1st Infantry Division was killed on feb. 7, 1945.

i never met him in all obviousness, but my grandmother remained bitter towards the germans till her dying day. she wouldn't/couldn't talk much about it, although i remember her going to the Beverly National Cemetery every year to visit him.

There are certain events that are really important, but you can't expect people to remember the date of every single important event of WWII, or of every war for a matter of fact.  Don't get upset if your classmates can't date the start of WWII.  Without looking it up, can you tell me the start date of The Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WWI, Vietnam (DEBATABLE), Korea (DEBATABLE), First Gulf, Afghanistan, Iraq?  If you want, use the opportunity to educate and give perspective, but don't get on a high horse because you know the date.

I don't think there is a reason to be depressed on December 7th.  To me, it's a reminder of the service men and women of WWII.  The glass is half full.

Some of the wars are debatable of when they stated.  Are you asking when it started from the beginning for at a point that it was a full out war?

I understand, but I think you're missing my point.  You can't get upset at people for not knowing the start date of WWII just because it is important to you.  You'd have to remember every important event of every war or every world event for that case.  However, I think a general knowledge of these events is important and they are lacking in the world today.

Oh i agree with you. If anything they should know is when, where, who and why....just in general facts

But he was referring to September 1st. Unless you are referring to the second part of my post.

Yeah, I'm just less picky on the when.  Knowing that Midway was WWII is enough for me, I don't see the advantage of knowing specific dates.

However, what really makes me sick is that 26% of Americans DO NOT KNOW WHY we celebrate 4th of the July or who we got our independent freedom from!

My Mom was born in 1925....she used to break down in tears every time a WW2 special/movie would show up on TV--half the boys in her high school graduating class (Wilson, NC) died in the war, several on D-Day. My Dad was a PBY pilot in Philippines, wish we'd talked more about such things before they passed away

Don't want to make this political, but I seriously doubt the integrity of a survey from a extremist pundit.

i always stop to take the time to acknowledge the significance of this date, and pay my deepest respects to the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines that served durring WW2. truly the greatest generation of Americans that ever lived.

and in my mind, as tragic as the attacks were, today will always go down as the beginning of the end of axis tyranny, and the terrible plauge of war that was cast all over the world
