Young people,,,, know your history!!!
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:40:30 AM »
So I stop my Medical today to pick up my records, A young female sailor comes to the window and asks "what can I do for you Chief?", stated to her that I was picking up my record so she assigned a clerk to get it, while we were waiting I mentioned that it was a beautiful day today but rather cold, she said she "really didn't notice", she then handed me a pen and paper to sign for the record and as I was signing the date I asked her "Do you know what today is?", she says "why yes Chief, its 07Dec", I replied "Yes, but do you know the significance of this date?", she stated "Tuesday?", "I asked her has she ever heard of ".... a day that will live in infamy..", of course the answer was a big fat "no".......

In front of that window, I made clear to her what this day meant and why every flag on every ship, on the waterfront and in this nation, every military base, school, public building, library, anywhere you see an American Flag that it will be displayed at Half Mast is because of the unfortunate events of Pearl Harbor, I also explained to her that history should never repeat itself, the only way to do that is to know where you have been.  Know your History.

We should never allow anyone to forget any of these events that so many have given their lives for.   :salute

Here you go kids, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VqQAf74fsE  catch up with the rest of us that know.

WTG!

It's always great to hear SNCOs remind the younger generation on what it is all about.  Many times I have had to remind Airman about the significance of dates!

Sad, but a very common occurance in this day and age. Being one of those youngsters you mention ( A mere 22 Years old) I feel very proud that I know the significance and I'm not even a yank.
However I know the feeling. On the anniversery of the battle of Culloden when the Jacobites were wiped out, ending the tale of Bonnie Prince Charlie and starting the Clearences which bump started the USA and canada, many people don't know what the battle is, or who fought.  :(

We are currently celebrating the Bicentenery of the Peninsular war, and many people haven't got a clue.

I fear for the world if this keeps up

Ask an Army guy, they will know about the navy stuff your navy person was not in tune to....

I agree, History repeats itself, because people never seem to understand the lessons before them.  Like, applying similar doctrines for Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which are as polar opposites as North and South.  Well Said.

BTW, we are kicking your Naval Butts on the 11th.  If Navy wins, I will up a set of Mossie 16s and let you pick them off one by one.  Want some??

:salute great post.   To many people lately, forget why people fought and died  for this country!

With the current political climate, and apology atmosphere in place, it is up to people like us to help the date live on, you dont even see it in the general media anymore.  for those who don't know history, are doomed to repeat it.    <S> all vets

I woke up to get a drink in the night (past 12am) and when I noticed the time took a few moments to think about the days events and those lost.

Unfortunately, this country does not put a premium on education.  Until that happens, this doctine of historical remembrance is inconsequental.   It's just not going to happen, sorry Dads.

Also, you have to remember this is the third generation removed from the event.  It gets pushed aside a bit, by events that are much more directly relating to the current century.  Unfortunately, only those with a inkling for history will remember, sorry.

I mean, unless you can disperse a little knowledge on the Spanish-American War.... :old:  you should just take it with a grain of salt, honestly.

"In front of that window, I made clear to her what this day meant  ..."

WTG Teddy Brewster!

I say visit her on November 11th, February 15th and April 9th and while
she's busy working and focusing on her job ask her what those dates
mean and if she fails give her another lecture in front of that window
about their significance.

<---just shakes head . I would be absolutely stunned speechless if someone in the United States navy couldn't tell me what today means as Americans. It seems insulting to me somehow.

Although I agree, I'm not surprised.  Again, not a premium on education when your recruits for non-officers these days are barely graduating from inner city high schools.

If the 'kids' don't know the history, it's because their elders didn't teach them, and I mean the parents.    Nice of you to share some history with the young sailor who didn't know.

I do get tired of the inevitable 'kids today' don't get it that tends to follow.  My older kids understood it, and my youngest will to, because we make sure they get it, and understand why it's important to know about their history.

Can't blame the kids if the generation before them blew it.

I am not terribly emotional by nature, and a fairly practical minded person all in all.  A few years ago I went to Hawaii early in December (but unfortunately just after the 7th) and made it a point to visit the Arizona memorial.  As a history buff and with a father who served in WWII in B-29's (yea, we're getting them in AH!), I anticipated I would have a significantly informative and intellectual event more than anything else.

However, as soon as I stepped off the shore boat onto the memorial, from then on it became completely different.  I stood in front of all the names carved into the memorial and tried to grasp the magnatude of what had happened on that day, and those many desparate days and years that followed.  It was simply not possible to truly comprehend, but only to try to emotionally understand.

I can't remember ever having cried in public as an adult, but I did so that day, standing over the railing, I looking down upon the submerged turret shafts of the Arizona, watching her bunker oil, the blood of 1177 American sailors, gently seep up from the depths of their place of rest, to stain the surface of the harbor waters even to this day.

Feeling conspicuous and self-conscious over my tears, I saw that others around me were paying no attention, while shedding tears of their own.  I can safely say I have never had a more emotional or saddening moment like that before or since.  And yet, in retrospect, it was also strangely uplifting as well.  I guess it's the thought that there were such men willing to serve our country in such full measure in her time of gravest need.  And that today, we still have those same kind of men, and now women, serving their country so selflessly, so honorably.

I feel those tears again today.
