Hi TheWobble,
I can't speak for the V5 5500 but I'm sure you will be very happy with the Radeon. I've not had any problems with mine right upto 1600,1200. Heavy smoke brings the frame rate down to the 20's but that's more due to my monitor (Old) than the card. Go for it

S!

Also using Radeon 64Mb DDR.Runs fine and there's a small little utility called Raid-On Tweaker to get more out of the card. Can be found at www.rage3d.com  There's also drivers and good FAQ.

Runs nicely.. though, needs more user end intelligence than nvidia products if wants to get all potential out (hmm, another good reason to call them nvidiots, they dont need to be intelligent with the card)

In AH, smoke is no more issue as it was with TNT2.
TNT2 = 5 fps in smoke
Radeon plus whole field smoked up = hardly goes below 20 FPS, most Ive seen was less than split second 14 FPS.
one smoke goes +40 FPS. (most FPS goes for buildings  )
In tower 75 FPS and in flight somewhere 55 - 65 FPS.
oh, thats with Cel 566@850 and 256mb ram.

Though, Radeon is not Rogue Spear friendly for example.
Sometimes I've seen missing faces (triangle holes) in the enviroment and when I moved all the textures of one map to backup directory to make up a screenshot of operative, it didnt work like it used to with TNT2 - operatives were having some missing faces.
Fog is also missing in this game.
With TNT2 fog was gone by turning off table fog, but with Radeon its same is it on or off, no fog.
but RS gets somewhat more alive when toggles on GameGamma feature or so (actually its on by default), since it increases saturation, but its not good at all if surrounding is mostly white.
but thats easily disabled.

However, Aces High works nice. (but still clouds do kill some FPS)

At least desktop looks bit cleaner with fonts and stuff than used to with TNT2.. hardly noticeably though, but some small fonts can be seen better.

Operation Flashpoint demo has some graphics mess up issues in the forrest and missing tank cockpit graphics.. though, im not sure whether that is Radeon or game issue.. probably game issue mostly.

but its cheaper than Nvidias and offers about same (if not better) performance at 32-bit color depth.

Skuzzy is the man for this.

Anyways, yes, it should be better than your V5 and should also have a longer lifetime as it has more features like a good T&L engine and many Dx8 optimizations.

I'd say the biggest thing the Radeon has going over the V5 is continued driver support.  Performance is about the same, but the Radeon comes on strong at higher resolutions thanks to it's Hyper-Z hidden surface removal feature.  The V5 does have better anti-aliasing though...

I'd probably go for the Radeon, though be prepared to deal with the nightmare that can be ATI's drivers.

Ahh.. fixed those abnormalities in the forrests of Operation Flashpoint.

I turned off LVB feature with Raid on Tweaker.
Though, ROT's help says this:

LVB
Enables/disabled Local Vertex Buffer. If this is on it'll allow the driver to store vertex buffers in video memory. Turning it off may save some memory but reduces T&L speed.

I did a quick test in 3D mark 2001's low detail car test and it showed significant FPS drop by half.
However, I didn't notice any difference in Operation Flashpoint. (either I have FPS up to heaven, which I don't believe or it didn't use T&L like 3d mark 2001)

3D mark 2000 helicopter test didn't show more than 5% loss of FPS without LVB.
