Gator revisited
« on: February 15, 2001, 09:36:00 AM »
A friend has a new Dell and dl'ed RW now she has gator and it will not delete.  She says that it goes away when she puts it in the trash and empties the trash bucket but it's back every morning when she re starts.
Her Dell has ME and she does not have access to any other OS.
Somewhere on this board I read how to get rid of gator but I can't find it now, any help appreciated

TIA

Sounds like she is just deleting the icon or something.

Do this:

Start Menu|Settings|Control Panel|Add\Remove Programs.

Now from the list choose "Gator" and "Offer Comanion" one at a time and hit "Remove".  Both programs will un-install properly this way.

you will have to do a lot more to get rid of this junk.
If you prefer the hard way, pull out the big knife (regedit) and scratch every bit out of your regestry, that is related with gator.
But there are also some good and easy tools like ad-ware (www.lavasoft.de), that will do it for you.

By the way, if you remove gator, your gozilla (if you have any) won't run anymore.

Shazbots!!! I hate doing tech support over the phone!!

If she deletes gozilla then re-downloads and re installs will she still have a problem?

There is no way I am going to attempt to talk her through a reg-edit on the phone

Question, does gator put anything into your start files.  I had to go over deleting a bunch of stuff that she claims she did not put there that was eating some 60% of her memory on each startup.

Thanx for the info.

Hi all,
Another good "spyware" removal progam can be found here. http://grc.com/optout.htm

<EDIT>
Whoops, Just tried the "adware" product on cleaners post above. "Optout" said all was wonderful with the world. the "adware product found one.   (And removed it)   Moving to "adware" now.

Another good way to find out if your computer has ad / spyware is to install the free firewall from zonealarm (www.zonealarm.com) which monitors all internet activity and lets you control the traffic program by program.

I found out gator was on my computer after installing RW immediately since zonealarm asked me if I want gator to access internet.. hell no I said and deleted the crap immediately.

Thanx all
I talked her into doing a server setup and dialed in and cleaned it all up for her.
Lavasoft cleaned it up (Thanx cleaner, tofri) and I installed clean copies of gozilla and zonealarm from my machine and set em up for her.
Last question, Is there a site or place that a person can send complaints about spyware to, I'd like to see these programs regulated out of existence.
