Dr Pepper on Keyboard
« on: December 14, 2010, 08:06:23 PM »
I spilled Dr Pepper on my keyboard, it still works. Just my space bar is a little sticky and I was wondering if it would eventually wear off if I keep using it.

Wipe it off with a commercial cleaner Stokes, just spray the cleaner on the cloth, not the keyboard (or it'll really be screwed lol....)

Suggest you turn it all off just to be on the safe side as well (shouldnt be a problem, but you just never know)

What kind of keyboard, mechanical or solid state.  I used to run them through the dish washer but not the dry cycle and worked wonders on sticky, dirty keyboards.

My G/F is a Chemist for DrPepper and she said that every keyboard on the factory floor is packed full of DrP.

I spilled hot and sour soup on mine.  I removed all the keys and washed them in the sink with hand soap.  use qtips to remove all the sticky stuff (from the soup) with alcohol as needed.  make sure you take a picture of how the keys are layed out.  make sure everything is dry before you pop the keys back in place.  I used a butter knife to remove the keys.

fill a bucket with really hot water, add a very small amount of washing up liquid and give the whole thing a good soak. make sure its completely dried out before you use it again :aok

edit: dishwasher sounds good too, if a bit extreme :D

I've seen a "modern" keyboard which had been under a leaking tube for a bit too long. It still almost worked after pouring a pintful of water out and letting dry for some months. Some letters didn't work, so I opened it up to do some studying. The mechanics is like three overhead films stapled together. The outer ones have silvery lines all over on the inner side and the middle one has holes according to the keyboard layout. The idea is to press the conducting lines together through the holes to close circuits. Now in that very keyboard the water had been inside just a little bit too long, so the conductive paint (?) had washed out in one corner.

If you want to be extra careful, open the keyboard (hopefully it's made with screws instead of plastic claws), remove the electronics, rinse the three layered film and separate the layers e.g. with a rolled newspaper. The plastic parts are durable, you can wash them any way you want to. Remember, sugar doesn't mix with alcohol, so don't try any spirituous wipes or the likes.

You know.. I seem to recall paying about $12 for my keyboard about 2 years ago and it's still working fine.

Also before that I had a wireless keyboard/mouse now sitting in my closet that I used for almost 3 years, and I got it on sale 50% off, paying $14.95 for it back then.  It still works fine but I got tired of screwing around with the batteries.

If something like that were to happen to mine, I think I'd be tempted to just buy a new one.  I know that all keyboard aren't cheap but I personally can't justify spending more than that when my $12 keyboard works just fine and does everything I want it to.

I do remember in the old days, throwing the old clickity IBM keyboards in the dishwasher..  I also remember downloading my first nudie picture with a 300 baud modem...

OOO she's a blonde!
OOO pretty eyebrows...
wait ... wait...
ooo blue eyes!
wait.. wait...
well defined cheekbones!
... ten minutes later...
YES!  Shoulders!!!
... fifteen minutes later...
SCORE!!! CLEAVAGE!
... five minutes later...
HERE IT COMES!!! I CANT WAIT!!!
"Host Disconnected"...
umm... whaaaaaa?!?!?!

And that was with .gif files.. if it was one of those new fangled .jpg images, you had to wait until the ENTIRE THING was downloaded before you could see it!
