Turtle Beach Santa Cruz-no sound from DVD
« on: December 24, 2001, 08:50:00 AM »
I'm a first time builder and I've got most of the machine up and running now but still a couple of probs to iron out.

The Toshiba DVD drive works OK but produces no sound when playing audio CDs or DVDs.
The TB SC card came with a single patch cable to connect the CDROM drive directly to the card - if I use this cable to connect the DVD to the SC, then I can get sound from audio CDs (but still not from DVDs).  And of course, then the CD can't play audio CDs.  I could buy another patch cable, but I the DVD player would still not produce sound from DVD movies.

Is there some kind of test software that can diagnose connection or configuration problems for Toshiba DVD drives?  Or what else could I try?

Thanks for any help!

You're using Win2k right?  In Win2k's device manager, in properties for your DVD drive, go to the properties tab.  There's a volume slider (make sure it is all the way up) and a checkbox for Digital CD playback.  Try checking the box and see if that gives you sound.

Thanks, Sancho.

That got me part of the way there - the DVD drive now plays audio CDs without using the patch cord.

But, still no sound fom DVD movies.  I get the picture and everything else about the drive seems functional.

I've been poking around in the BIOS settings for the drive.  "Type" is set to "auto", PIO is set to 4, and ULTRA DMA mode is set at 2.

Do you think it has anyhting to do with these settings?  Where can I find out more about what they are and how to set them correctly?

Thanks!

I had a similar problem after loading Silent Hunter 2 and the required "Quicktime" Movie player.  It seems the Quicktime clobbered my Cine drivers somehow.  I had to reload the system cinema drivers to get movie sound.  I suspect your trouble may be related to these drivers!
