Tuk's new toy
« on: December 17, 2010, 04:59:29 PM »
Christmas came early for ole Tuk this year. I got a bonus and bought me a Smith Wesson  MP 15-22.  I have always wanted a tactical rifle and the 22 caliber will be cheap to shoot around the farm...
Things that I already put on it.
1. TrueGlow  Holigraphic red dot system
2. Tactical flash light
3. Red laser
4. Extra mag
Enjoy.. Tuk151

Smith has done some good work with their AR and variant rifles.  I've had a chance to get my hands on a few M&P 22's and they've been pretty good guns for what they are.

It's a good option for plinking around your farm and groundhog control.  This is my version of pest control:

Takes care of anything from groundhogs to coyotes to whitetail deer.

Sweet!.  I can already see that a new stock will be ordered along with the magpul rail gaurds.. Then perhaps a bipod. Did you have to get a shorter 10 rnd clip in order to use the bipod? :salute

Harris makes some nice bipods, that are telescoping, so you can shoot with a higher capacity mag. ( and are a 3 minute install )

I'd assume you can buy an adjustable-length bipod. My brother had one with his is DPMS AR before he sold it.

I use Harris bipods. The bipod pictured extends to 13" and I have several different ones I use in that same length.  Some have 1" detents to adjust the height and will extend to different lengths on either side which is nice if you're on a hillside.  I don't remember the model name differences but some are an LM (this has detents) and the others are L series or something like that.  I've found the 9"-13" works well for me for my hunting and bench shooting needs without requiring anything longer.

I use 20 round magazines for hunting most things where legal.  I have some modified Pmags that hold 5 and a couple modified to hold 3 so I stay legal when required.  Sometimes I'll use a 30 round magazine (hog hunting comes to mind for this) but I'll usually carry a carbine length AR for that if I'm using something chambered that small.  My primary hog gun is a Springfield M1A with homegrown loads topped with Sierra GameKing bullets.  I've had hogs run away after taking 6 hits from an AR (granted it was the WRONG ammunition for hogs) and I don't want to be on the wrong end of one that's pissed off and charging.  As far as using them with a bipod 30 round magazines work fine with it extended.  You can't change magazines without the bipod extended and the gun will rest on the magazine instead of the grip when not in use with a 30 rounder.  I typically don't like that so like I said I stick with 20 rounders.  They're lighter, more compact and work perfectly.

I'm not one to tell you what to do with your guns but do remember it's a .22.  No need to go tacticool crazy with the thing strapping accessories on it if you don't want to.  The CTR as pictured above has no play when locked up tight and is also adjustable so shooters of different size can shoot this and my other ARs.  I consider them a must for centerfire.  The MOE or MIAD grips used in conjunction with the Magpul trigger guards are great for not tearing up your finger on the stock aluminum trigger guards (I don't know if the M&P22 comes with an aluminum or polymer one.  If it's polymer that's better IMO) and more comfortable to my hand.  But a light and laser?  Well...that's all well and good but I wouldn't spend too much money there.

People just never seem to listen when I tell them about the right tool for hog hunting...

It'll reach out and touch somebody alright, and don't even get me started on the stopping power!
