Hi Bashwolf,

I did the same as you are thinking of. I went from a celeron 300a to P3 600. That was the highest I could go with this board at the time and with the bios updates that were available. It all depends on the version of the board you have, I think.

Mine is the BH6 1.01
I believe the BH6 1.1 could go with a higher cpu than the P3 600.

I have yet to successfully overclock this cpu. I've heard others have done it with this combo, but not sure which version of the board they had. I also think 133 ram is in order for me to do that. Sorry, that's about all I can help you with.

Bashwolf,
Go to the ABIT website and see what the latest bios for your board is. It should tell you the highest cpu you can get.

You can check your board version by opening the case and looking at the little white sticker on the ASI slot. You might need a little inspection mirror to see it!  hehe   It's not really easy to see. At least on my motherboard. Should say 1.01 or 1.1

I have abit bh6 1.2 and I'm running a celeron 667@901Mhz. All you need to do is flash your bios. Go to www.abit.nl  to find bios files. Follow instructions carefully! Flashing the bios can render your motherboard useless if something goes wrong.

I've done 5 flashes to my mobo and it's working fine so far ;-)

An easy way to find out which revision motherboard you have is to run Sisoft Sandra
or even 3DMark2001 (www.madonion.com) which will give you some system info

Since you have the A-Bit BH6 you will be unable to use the Duron, BH6 will only use celerons or better, also and importantly get your self a grounding wrist strap so that when your handling the new/or old cpu they don't get smoked by and ESD discharge.

Okay let me make it easier since my typing skill the greatest.

Looking at Sisoft Sandra

Extended mainboard

I got
Manufacturer   Abit
Model      Green/AGP/PCI/ISA System
Serial Number     07/10/1998-i440BX-W83977-2A69KA1EC-FL

Chipset     INTEL 440BX/ZX Chipset

Would this determine what version I have??

whels1,
You're right. It is the Katamai, not the coppermine. At the time I switched cpu's everything I read up on said the coppermine wouldn't work in the BH6. LOL.
Just my luck.

Bash, the easiest way I know of to check your BH6 version is to remove the side cover on your box and look at the sticker on the ISA slot. It should be right on the side of it.

Thank you Grizz,

I have the same version as yours,  V1.01

Which of the bios did you downloaded.  There are few of them or you just dnload the one that is at top of the list with most recent date.  There few bios uptdae each pertaining to somethign different.  Or the curent bios will cover all the rest of issues as well.

Sorry about the above  dumb question.  Just want to make sure and I am not really computer techy    When i went to abit website one of bios update mention celeron upto 700 mhz does aplly for PIII 700 too.

Ok what you guys recemmend Celeron or PIII CPU for this MB.

Thank You

At least to my 1.2 the sticker must be on the lower part side of the ISA slot so it's not possible to read it without removing the motherboard from the case. It's either that or then I don't have that sticker..

Bash: Download 3DMark2001 and see the system info part. It will tell you straight which revision your board is (can't recall right now if Sandra tells that in laymans terms.)

In addition, you get the coolest 3D benchmarking program to boast off your friends.
