Lockup problem fixed
« on: April 23, 2001, 08:06:00 AM »
Symptom:  AH would lockup when in smoke or new cloud formations.  AH was the only application locking up.  Lockup would require a PC reset.

Story:
Over the holidays, I replaced my PII400 with a PIII600 (slot 1).  Only the processor was replaced.  It was an OEM processor so I had to install a heatsink.  My Micron tower case has a fan that blows across the processor.

Some time after the processor replacement, the lockups started to happen.  I thought that it coincided with a new version of AH.  I tried different video drivers and reseating all of the hardware but lockups would still happen.  AH was the only program locking up, but it did not happen regularly.

Then I bought Black and White (game) two weeks ago and it would lock up, although less often than AH.  Now I am thinking that maybe the processor had been the problem all along and I was going to try and put the old one back in to test it, when I almost burned my fingers off pulling out the PIII.  The heatsink and fan obviously wasn't doing enough to cool the CPU.  I bought a new heatsink/fan combo from 3DCool.com and installed it and I have not had a lock up of any kind in 3 weeks.  I should have noticed that the lockups happened more often as the spring temperatures arrived.

So after 4-5 months of swearing at AH and my Viper550, it turns out the problem was caused by an overheating CPU.

After having AH lockup nearly daily, I am now three weeks without a single lockup.  I encourage anyone with weird hard lockups, in AH only, to check their CPU temp.
