What type of soundcard is it?  If it's a soundblaster, make sure the gameport device is listed under device manager.  If it's a Soundblaster card, try newer drivers.  Soundblaster drivers are generally pretty buggy.  :(

Some of those Precision Pros 1 had a USB adapter included with them.  If it does, try connecting it that way.

Are you using ME?  When I got my new system with ME my MS PP no longer worked. I tried the MS Precision 2 and same result.  I didn't want Force Feedback but had to buy MS FF2 to make it work with ME.  You would think Billy Gates would put out a patch to make HIS sticks work with HIS OS.

I had the same issue with my old Sidewinder 3D Pro.  I eventually gave up trying to make it work and got a newer Precision Pro with the USB adapter.  Works perfectly.

Make sure you have DX 8, the latest sound drivers, and the VIA 4-in-1's as well.  Also use http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com  to make sure your OS is up to date.

Also make sure you have the latest version of the Sidewinder software, and look for any patches.

There is a patch at the sidewinder site for stick not being recognized.

It's not his stick nor his os. And not his patch to put out, hes not a programmer.

If you did a little searching on any search engine before needlessly mouthing off you would know how to get the stick to work.

Also if you dont like ms os/hardware than don't use it. Noone is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to use it.

JPEG,
Wow, touchy! Is Billy Gates your father? Instead of shooting off your mouth and putting me down, why don't you help the guy out and tell him where he can find the info?  I did research it along with the Alienware Tech Support staff and at the time MS PP was not compatible with ME.  I haven't checked it since because my MS FF2 does work with ME.  Sorry if I ruffled your feathers.  I was just trying to help the guy out with his problem.

Hey dipshit (windsurf1)... someone already pointed him to the fix.  In your blind anti-all-that-is-microsoft rage, you missed it.

The problem lies in the faster systems (hardware) and is not OS nor is it joystick related.  If anything... its the fault of a joystick made well enough to last through multiple computer system upgrades and OS installs.  Damn that Microsoft for making one of the best all-purpose joysticks durable enough to last for 5 years or more.

AKDejaVu,
The cold weather must be affecting you guys. Does it make you feel better to call people childish names? Actually I didn't miss the post with a fix for the SW 3D PRO.  I wasn't aware that it also worked on the SW Prec Pro. Great, I hope it does. Unlike you and Jpeg  I only made a post here to try to HELP someone narrow down his problem.  My problem could be related to my VIA USB Host controller which MS patched for the MS FF2 and did not for other models (even Prec 2). Alienware Tedh support spent a lot of time trying to find a fix while I was on the phone with them after I had given up. I didn't say I hated MS hardware or software.  I was just unhappy that I had to buy the more expensive FF2 to make it work.  I like my MS sticks and have used them 3 years now. I hope you guys feel beeter in the spring. I understand your gloom as I lived near Portland all my life till I moved to Hawaii 14 years ago.

Windsurf1,

If the shoe fits.. you might as well wear it.  The names fit you to a tee.

As for what you offered... virtually everyone else dismissed it because this is a known problem regardless of WinME or 98.  The fix was posted... quit acting as if you actually helped.
