Name me the first casualties during a state of war in December of 1941. What was the target and what was the platform causing the casualties.

Pretty sure it's something to do with the Carrier Akagi, but I'm not 100%

EDIT: Wait a minute isnt this Pearl Harbor

2nd EDIT: Now I am confused because Japan never declared a state of war...  :headscratch:

I mean by December 1941 there were several places to look for a "state of war." Britain and Germany were at war. Germany had already started its offensive on the USSR. Japan was at war with China. Surrounding nations were obviously affected. There are many places to look before concluding who died on Dec, 1st 1941.

Britain and France declared war on Germany 3rd September 1939.

Germany declared war on the United States 11 December 1941 at which point the US then declared war on Germany.

The first US forces didn't really start arriving in the European theater until January 1942. Not surprising considering the attack by the Japanese at Pearl. The war in Europe had been in progress for 2 1/2 years by this time.

Anyway, in answer to your question, I would guess it must be related to Pearl Harbour as the US wasn't at war with anyone up to that point in time.

December 7 1941 the USS Ward fired 2 shots at a Japanese midget submarine the first shot passing over the conning tower the second shot hitting the sub on the right hand side and base of the conning tower sinking the submarine there by the United States fired the first shots of WWII killing the crew of the submarine. A total of 5 Submarines were launched to attack the harbor 4 of the 5 are accounted for and the 5th still remains a mystery as to where the sub is. Some believe the sub actually entered the harbor and fired both its torpedo's. There is a picture that shows 2 torpedo's and its wakes leading back to a shadow that many think this is the 5th submarine. If this is the case I believe the 5th sub is still in the harbor and just hasn't been found yet

But no state of war was declared on Dec 7tth. Japanese had not even written a declaration of war until after they heard of the successful attack on Pearl Harbor  :old:

Derk WWII started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The US didn't enter into the war until December 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl.

So, just to clarify something that Gaboon stated. The US did not fire the first shots of the second world war. They may have fired the first shots at Pearl Harbour, but the war had been going on in europe for over 2 years by that time.

gaboon didn't specify that it was the first US casualty of Dec 1941 so I am thinking it is unrelated to Pearl Harbor.
