The United States wasn't at war when USS Ward sank that sub.

President Roosevelt didn't sign the declaration of war until the next day. December 8, 1941.

Interestingly enough the gun from the Ward is outside the capital building in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Many of the crew were reservists from Minnesota.

The question might be.. When did the Second world war actually become a "World War".. From most of what I have read this was when Japan attacked the United States on 7 Dec. 1941.. Prior to that it was considered "A European conflict".. I may be mistaken here but that has been my impression..

September 19, 1931 Japan marches into China.

Germany and Italy didn't make their move until 1936.

Yes I know.. But again, Japanese aggression against China was also considered to be a localized (Asian) Conflict.. Japan also became a member of the Axis powers prior to 7 Dec. 1941.. It was for this reason that Hitler declared war upon the United States immediately following the attack on Pearl.. But it was the attack on Pearl that brought the U.S., ultimately, into the war.. Many would argue that this was the turning point at which the conflict became Global..

WWII wasn't a world war until the United States entered the war when we declared war on Japan on Dec. 8 1941. The United States was in a state of war knowing a attack was eminent but just didn't know where the attack would come from. All patrol ships had orders to fire on any unidentified ships.

Since the question was "Name me the first casualties during a state of war in December of 1941. What was the target and what was the platform causing the casualties."

Since most of the world EXCEPT the United States was at war at that time, those "first casualties during a state of war in December 1941" would probably be from many other nationalities.

Those two Japanese sailors were just two of tens of thousands that lost their lives around the world at that time.

You must be joking?

A) The world was at war long before Pearl Harbour.
The Battle of Britain had been waged.
Russia had been invaded
And the only battle of note on US soil was Pearl Harbour which isn't on mainland USA. Further, was there any fighting of note in the whole American continent (both north and south)? Your understanding of world is a little flawed. Either that or the rest of us are wrong.

B) What is a "State of War"? A state of war only exists after a declaration. That's why most of the world uses the term conflict after Vietnam and Korea in historically dealing with them.

C) I would suggest every patrol vessel fires on unidentified ships whether it was 1941 or 2011 if those ships pose a threat. i'm sure if I was to sail up to the CVN-77 in an unmarked boat I wouldn't get a bunch of flowers thrown at me.

Next time for Trivia maybe ask "How long is a piece of string? It's a bit more precise.

Huh, I thought I smelled some fish there.

If not, this is a very, very sad statement.

Well, prior to the US entering the war formally, discounting of course the aid we were sending abroad, what country was involved prior to US entry that linked combatants across the circumference on the globe?  Canada perhaps?

And your right about the US not being the center of the universe, England is right?  Greenwich is 0'0".

To the OP, well the battle for Hong Kong began on that day, going to be pretty hard to neck that one down...
