Connection and frame rate
« on: December 24, 2010, 09:33:08 AM »
A general question...

When there are many players on, complicated terrain drops my frame rate considerably.  Is it A) My graphic card or B) My connection.  I usually run 60 FPS, when multiple cons fly through my FOV, the drop to the 30s.

When the issues happen as the numbers of objects in the area increase it is more often than not a resources issue on your end. How much ram do you have? What kind of graphics card do you have? How many processes are you running in the background on your computer?

I'd be pretty comfortable saying it isn't your connection.  I played for years on a 26K dial-up connection, and had zero issues with many of the things people blame on connection, once I had my computer settings worked out.

When I jumped to a much faster/better connection, my pings dropped from 225 or so down to 70 or so.  I saw zero influence on the game (and on frame rate) from that.

On the other hand, some tweaks to my system made drastic, very noticeable changes to the game.  I don't know if I'd blame your card though, I actually saw better results from a better Processor, RAM, and power supply.  But that was because my graphics card was better than those items, but was being held back by them.

Short of replacing hardware, I think I'd look at making sure your rig is running as well as it can, with the bare minimum of background processes, etc...

Ithink it is the comp for sure then.  I run gamebooster, I just have a real weak computer.  Guess it is finally time for an upgrade. Thanks.

Like the others have said it is most likely a resource issue with your comp. The hard part is trying to figure out what the best course of action is. The good news is there are many knowledgeable people on these boards that can give you some good advice.

I'm not sure that gamebooster is a help or a hindrance. http://www.hitechcreations.com/frameset1.html?../main.html
I've never used it so I can't say for sure.

I use to use fsautostart which worked great shutting down unnecessary background processes while flying AH. It has since been replaced with alacritypc, which I have never used so I don't know how well it works.

I do know that if you can get the background processes down to a bare minimum it will help in those high demand situations.

Look at Waffle's video setting tips in the Tech support forum. That will help getting the best performance out of your current hardware.

Before you pull the trigger on an Alienware you might want to contact tildeath. I would bet that he could build you something better for around the same money.
