Carrier arresting wire questions
« on: December 24, 2010, 10:44:45 AM »
Why does this happen? I make a perfect landing on the carrier, my tailhook snags the arresting wire, I come to a stop and then I'm immediately slig-shoted off the back of the carrier deck into the ocean?

Also, why do I sometimes snag a wire but the re-arm doesn't work? Are there only certain wires for re-arming?

Your throttle adjustments are not shutting the engine down enough.

if ya go a bit too far, for whatever reason, drop rpm's as low as possible, full flaps, then crack throttle till plane goes backwards (helps if some tard isnt turning cv)

As far as the slingshot thing, been a while, stay on brakes, kill engine?

Check your touchdown speed you want to be 100mph or less.

If you try to back up, or you try to launch with the tail hook down after snagging a wire it will fling you off the end.

If you snag one of the forward wires you are out of the re-arm area.

Try to raise the tail hook as soon as you stop. It's not a bad habit to get in to, and can save you the grief of getting flung off the stern after a successful re-arm.

Have had this happen a few times to myself. Was told if you catch the wire left or right of center this will happen when hook finally reaches center as it travels down the wire & it will slingshot you back?

It's actually just as funny, to me at least, when it happened to me.  Lost the film to a rip and rebuild but, as soon as I figured out what happened, I laughed myself sore :D

If you really want to give 'em a laugh in the tower. Drop flap, back up. As you move to the the rear of the deck, drop hook.
The speed and manner that it hurls you off is really a blast to watch.

If you back up (intentionally or otherwise) there is a bug where the hook will shoot you off the back. Not always, but often enough. The solution: RAISE HOOK before backing up!

This is the combined effect of two physics glitches, one of which is beneficial.

The first is that you can back up on the carrier deck. By making your aircraft's mathematics work out that it should be traveling slower than the aircraft carrier, you can slide backwards across the deck. This is accomplished by raising the throttle very slightly.
The second is that we do not have explicit "wires" running across the deck and the way that they're modeled. It seems as though there is a near-infinite number of wires strewn across the back of the deck. For each one you touch, there is a slight backward force applied to your hook, thus slowing you to a stop quickly if you're traveling forwards. If you're going backwards, however, the hook touches one wire after another until you gain so much speed you can't stop, thereby flying backwards off the deck.

Learn to land with your hook up, calibrate or even under-calibrate your throttle (don't move it quite the full range, tricking the game into thinking its throw is short), or pull your hook up as soon as you stop.
