question about resolution in-game
« on: December 26, 2010, 08:22:38 PM »
OK,I run hi-res..

What I am wondering is,if someone goes with a lower res, which tends to make things bigger, will this give an edge on getting kills,as the plane in front of you would/should? be bigger on your Front end..

Just a question that popped into my head while driving at work the other day..

I think you are mistaking screen resolution with texture resolution.  Hi-res is pertains to texture resolution, giving you crisper, cleaner objects (such as a/c & such).

Texture resolution (hi res) doesn't change the size so no it doesn't give anyone an edge.

The image that is displayed on your monitor is not what the game uses to calculate where everything is.
The plane doesn't actually get bigger, it's just (in some cases) displayed over a wider area.

Actually I disagree guys, Falcon23 got it right.

I got my first clue into this back in 2002 at the AH con. Was watching Drex get ready for the 2vs2 champtionship. One of the things he did was turn his screen res from 1600x1200 down to 800x600.

On the same screen, same monitor, at the same distance, planes are now much larger.
Gunnery is done on your FE, so what you "see" is what you hit, is what gets sent to the other guy.

Now granted most don't like flying at 800x600, it doesn't look as good.
But rather than cranking screen resolution to the max you might want to look at keeping it low.
Changing screen res from 1600x to 800x would quadruple the enemy plane sizes. Making them much bigger targets.

Typically I run 1280x720. And would probably drop it to 1024 for a duel.

Texture size doesn't come into it at all.

Try it for yourself if you don't believe me.

I thought lower res didnt actualy make the object bigger, it just makes it easier to see against the background of land or sea. I could be wrong though.

I changed from 1920x1080 to 1360x780 and I can see planes alot clearer at the lower res. But I play on the low res textures and low detail terrain, so might just be me.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

I did :)

They are not larger. In the same screen, a plane will have the same size at the same distances. I actually measured it with a ruler at 1980x1080, 1280x720 and 640x480. The plane length was the same at all three resolutions.
What can help though is a more "blocky" appearance at times if you got less than perfect eyesight.

Changing Res does not make planes bigger or smaller. Changing texture res does not have any effect.

What it does do is make PIXELS Bigger. So the smallest dot AH can display becomes bigger, so at far distances where the plane is 1 pixel or smaller it is then displayed bigger. But once you see plane detail it is the same size at any res.

The things that do become bigger are things that are pixel size based like the User Interface/cursor and other text items.

Which explains why a squaddie flying right next to me calls out cons a few seconds before I can see them, because I run at 1600x1200 and he's running a bit lower than that and his "con pixel" is bigger and he can see it easier than I can see mine.

so the only real advantage then, would be to spot a con a few seconds earlier than someone running a higher resolution?

I suck at this game and no matter of pixels, big or small will change that.   :rofl

I would like to know why the cons blend in so well on the deck...I lose vis on a lot of a/c at 400 down on the deck and I didn't in the past.
