Radeon 7500....Defective?

Ok this is crap. On my family computer i got a problem. Its and HP with a 500 PIII but that doesnt matter. Recently i decided to replace the Voodoo4 4500 that it was running. I replaced it with a Radeon 7500, which won out oiver the lowerend titanium series visiontek, the Geforce2 Ti based one. I get it running get all my updates start a game,,,,in this case F1 2K1,,,,,and the movies go by, then when it gets to picking my car or racing, all i get are flashing triangles of multiple different colors. You see a flash of tyhe race sometimes but a tiny mount of times. It happens in any three-D part of any of my games. Flashpoint, IL2, AH, Mighty 8th, RS/UO/BT, GR, FS2K, FS2K2, Nascar 2K, Nascar 2K1, Madden 2K1, NBA Live 2K1, Midtown Maddness2, MLB 2K1, i think you get the picture. Whenever it starts to have to do some 3d rendering they diddly up and do what i said above. I cant figure it out ive messed with everysetting in AND out of the book. ATI support told me to screw off, that id either broken my chip on purpose and to refoer to the dealer or that i had a problem and should ask the dealer(best buy) about what to do. I am now led to believe from the way it is acting that the 3d chip maybe messed up.

p.s. There is one exception, when i run it in software only mode it does work, BUT THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE, I PAID FOR A WORKING CHIP AND I DDINT GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you've made sure its not an issue with multiple/corrupt drivers (by uninstalling all drivers and REMOVING it from your device manager), and your direct X is all up to date, then you may just have a bad chip.  Just return it and get a replacement card.   :)

How do you know the monitor is fried?  If it really is, I'd say ATI should be forced to pay for it.

I thought go into some more detail here: It's unlikely you could have fried your 21" monitor.  You would have needed to try to run it at an extremely high refresh rate that it doesn't support.  The chances are that when you went to play a game the monitor switched to a resolution it didn't support and went black.  If you put it back on your old computer you will probably find it works just fine.

I personally think that the problem is as simple as you forgot to go into add/remove programs and remove the old Radeon 4500 drivers and software.  Then you need to reboot the system and switch to standard VGA mode.  Now you turn off the system and put the new video card in.  After that, you boot the system and load the drivers for the Radeon 7500.  The fact that only your game graphics are messed up strongly indicates this is the case.  Newer drivers from ATI may also resolve the problem.  I'm not saying the video card isn't defective, but the fact that Windows graphics are working properly indicates to me that this is the case.  (Note:  You may also have to change the video settings in your games to the new video card instead of the old one.)

I hope you get it straightened out.  :)

I "borrowed" an ATI 8500 from work for about two weeks. Uninstalled my GeForce2 ultra down to vga driver, installed ATI card, downloaded latest rivers from ATi site. Not a single issue. Check benchmark thread for rating. Good card. Produces better picture on 19" trinton but had lower, slightly lower fps than the ultra.
Good luck with your computer problem & your high blood pressure  :)

Excuse me for saying this but hobodog seems the kind of person who installs hardware in a rush and then panics when it doesn't go right the first time.

Chances are he will finally manage to really break his hardware in anger before he has time to find out what his actual problem is/was.

Patience is a virtue when troubleshooting hardware.

No i am a meticulous slow installer. The kind who is i guess like the dad in a christmas story, i work and work and yell well not the entire time but i do yell. But i was high wound, luckily i dont ever use the computer that the monitor was on. Though i was gonna put it on another computer and use it but, scracth that. Oh and i returned it and got the lowerend exstacy based on the Geforce2 Ti. Perfect so far and an excellent card. And i took apart the monitor to see if something was just messed up. But no such luck, the entire thing is messed up cuz of that damn card. Oh and after that last expirience it thing ill need to install a defrillibrator next to the big screen.

Srry for the curses, wont happen again, well not till i install the new memory on the computer. J/k.

Oh and Mr. Ripley, the guy at Best Buy said they had already had several people return the same card.

Maybe the cheats are just repackaging the dead card. Hehehe.

me thinks he's a nVidia plant ...

nothing but good luck with ATI cards here ...

great fps with nVidia geforce2 ultra but fuzzy text if you go over 1024 x 768 desktop ...

never heard of a video card frying a monitor, maybe the monitor was going to go anyway ...

Just thought I would add, don’t open up your monitor.  I’m not the sharpest tack when it comes to desktops but know enough to stay out of a CRT set.  For anyone else who may be reading this with monitor problems don’t go prying it open unless you know what you’re looking at.

As far as burning out a monitor.  Hehe, damn the bad luck.  I bough a new video card then two weeks later my 19” burns out.  Was bargain shopping for a video card when to think if I had waited a few more weeks I could have passed a better video card off as the monitor price.  Wife justification you see  :D.
