Didn't a P26 get the first American A2A kill of the war? I might be mistaken, but i remember reading it somewhere

P36s claimed a couple kills at Pearl Harbor.  This might be what you are thinking of. Harry Brown's Kate kill was possibly the first A2A kill.   There were P-26s in the Philippines, flown by Filipino pilots that got airborne, but none at Pearl.

If you're not limiting it to "official" American kills, American pilots in Eagle Squadrons were flying and fighting around the Battle of Britain (a year before the US officially entered the war) and AVG pilots in China were engaged with the Japanese before Dec 7 1941 as well.
