AGP Bios settings
« on: May 08, 2001, 06:30:00 AM »
hi guys, I've joined the wonderfull world of AGP, with an asus 7V MB and a Geforce2 MX 32 MB Vid card.

How should this be set in the bios?

What's all this about "apature", "driving strength" and so on?

Can any one advise?

and of course, what's the current "hot" driver set??

TIA :-)

S!

I would recommend AGP aperture size for 32 or 64MB,depending on Your amount of RAM,but never less than the RAM on the graphics card.Use AGP 4x and Fast Write Support.Leave the driving value as it is.The default is pretty good.Hottest drivers..well nVidia has a whole bunch of them.It is just trying out them and deciding which ones are best for Your rig   One link is www.reactorcritical.com

You will have the least amount of problems if leave driving strength to auto and frame buffer to the default.  (64 MB I think.)  As for AGP speed, set this to 2x, 4x can cause problems.

Make sure you have the newest Via AGP driver installed in turbo mode.  Via drivers can be downloaded from www.viahardware.com.

The hot driver right now would be the detonator 12.10s.  These are kind of flaky if your desktop and AH resolutions and refresh rates are not identical, so make sure you set them the same.  www.the-cntl-alt-delete.com  has the newest detonators first.

[Edit:  I messed up the link text, but if you click it it will be right. ]

One other thing, if you put pc133 ram in your system, make sure you set the ram to 133 Mhz in the bios.  This will gain you some speed.

You can also try setting system performance to optimal, but if you don't have top quality ram your system will probably crash a lot.

One other thing ... you can use SiSoft Sandra to test your various setting/changes that you made.

Thanks for the replies!

Bloom, by frame buffer do you mean apature? I don't seem to be able to find a frame buffer menu item.. The bios was set to "optimal" by default and all seems stable.

I should point out that every thing works OK, I'm just concerned with geting the most out of this system.

I do have one configuration problem however...

After a long period of disk inactivity, such as spending an hour reading an HG, or game playing for an hour, my P.C. hangs on shut down. In a normal cycle, if I click the close down or restart button, it closes down (and turns off) fine. However, when it hangs, windows shuts down, but the power supply and CPU fan keep running. I can prevent it just by opening explorer and "waking up" the disks first. Any ideas? All power saving schemes in Bios and windows are disabled...

Again, thanks.

Yes I ment aperature, sorry.

If you've got optimal working without getting lockups when scrolling the mouse in internet explorer than be happy.  Many users have problems with this.

As for the lockup, I would have suggested setting the power management thing.

Are you by chance running Windows 98 SE or Windows ME?  Those two versions have had problems with shutdown problems.  Check the Microsoft knowledge base for more info here.  You might check the critical updates for windows and see if there are any shutdown patches available for your OS.  www.windowsupdate.com
