Windows 2000 users get more FPS
« on: May 09, 2001, 12:22:00 AM »
I figured out a way to gain a ton more fps in Aces High when running under win2k.  It's very easy:

Open notepad:

type this in EXACTLY
_____________________________ ________________

echo off
Start /abovenormal aceshigh.exe

_____________________________ ________________

(Note:  for even more fps you can put "start /high aceshigh.exe" on the second line, but if you alt tab out windows will respond VERY SLOWLY.)

save this file, but there is a trick here.  Save the file in your program files/HTC/aceshigh/ directory.  Name the file "aceshigh.bat" MAKE SURE you use the quotes.  (Either that or pick "all files" before saving, otherwise notepad will add a .txt extension)

All you have to do now is update your shortcut to start AH.  Just right click it and pick properties.  Pick the shortcut tab.  In the target window you should see something like "c:\program files\HTC\Aces High\aceshigh.exe"  All you have to do is change the last aceshigh.exe to aceshigh.bat (or whatever you named the file).

I picked up a good 5 fps going to abovenormal priority, and I would get even more going to high, the problem is that then RW doesn't get enough CPU cycles and can cause problems.  The only drawback I see is that windows will be kinda slow if you alt tab out, since Aces High is now being given more RAM and CPU time.

(BTW:  This trick works in all games or files.)

Oh, btw if you are somehow annoyed that the icon picture for Aces High gets changed to a gear, do this:

Right click shortcut (just like before), properties, shortcut tab, click "change icon"  windows will give you a pop up, click ok, click browse, go to your aces high directory and double click on the aceshigh.exe file (the one with the spade icon).  That should do the trick!

Yeah or then you can do like I do, open AH icon with right mouse button, select start at high priority and voilá! Game is running without any .bat editing.

Won't take much longer than clicking the icon normally when starting the game.

I use this little app called a Win 2000 launcher.

You can get it here:  http://www.gameroffice.com/

It's great.  I'm rid of all the icons.  Plus, I can adjust the CPU priority of each game.  This thing also works with things like Diablo II, and it will watch so that if there is a front-end app that spawns the game later (like D2) it will boost it's priority as well.  It also lets you change what CPU things run on on a multi-processor box.

That's true Mr.Sid, that works too.  This is just so easy and requires no special clicking to launch.  (The batch file does it automatically for you.   )

I did not notice any increase in framerate when I upped priority to "above normal" and "high".  So I tested this using Fradim's benchmark.  At 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 in 32 bit, no difference in framerate was observed at higher priority.

For you to get a noticable increase in FR I would have to assume that you are running a lot of processor intensive tasks in the background.

Hmm, I would not suggest people try this if they want RW to work correctly.  RW has problems ( ha! it has problems with everything) if it's priority is different than AH.

Another great article about optimising W2k for game use:
