If you are looking at AKs do some real research.  There are a bunch of different types based on Yugo, Polish, Chinese, Egyptian, Bulgarian, East German parts kits and that's not all of them.  Then it's stamped recievers, or milled.

I'd suggest spending some time on the AK forum.  You can learn a lot.
http://208.109.209.156/

My son was the AK nut and he started with a Romanian SAR1, then moved on to a Polish PKMS underfolder built by In Range.  He also had an AK103, and a Krebs Custom AK74

He was in the same boat.  Money.  Started with the cheap one, but ended up saving his pennies for the Krebs, which was his nicest AK.  I have 3 AK kits that I hope to have built in time as my younger son grows up.  Two are Polish underfolder kits and the other is a Bulgarian AK74 kit.

Thanks Guppy! As always great info! I'm checking the forums now. I won't have enough money for a new AK for at least a month or two, so I've got plenty of time to study!

It's funny, I might be the only one I know who didn't like firing the AK-47 as much as other rifles.  Everything about it feels sloppy, the sound it makes, it's build, the bolt, etc.  It's also the only gun that jammed on me that day, caught the end of the shell in the bolt, apparently called a "stovepipe jam" because of how it looks or something.  I guess that's why it's so reliable in mud and sand, though; low tolerances.

However, right after I shot a .308 R700 and fell in love with that immediately.  A) I like bolt actions, and B) The kick really lets you know how much lead you are throwing down range.  Just very solid and fun to shoot (It also had a bi-pod and a scope... Ooooh boy, I felt so tactical and professional :D).

I have fired a lot of firearms and I have to say that my newly purchased CVA Silver Trophy Hunter III is the most fun yet! I spent hours at the range Thursday firing this rifle. It is dead on balls acurate @ 250 yards.

The only problem at first was the actual firing of the rifle. You see it's a flintlock. I have a brown bess and you have to close one eye when firing that rifle because of the pan flash. With this CVA it directs the flash away from you. The rifle has a one second delay in actual firing time.

This rifle presents quite a challenge when hunting deer for the reaction time from pan flash to bullet exiting barrel makes for difficult shooting when the deer moves. I like a challenge though, Unlike some of these folks shooting deer with high powered rifles from 40 yards away, and they are 25 yards away from the 4X4 quad runner that brought them there.

(Image removed from quote.)

Flintlocks are a blast!  They're the only ignition-type black powder firearms I've owned for the past 25 years!

It sounds like you have something wrong with your lock, though.  Your Brown Bess (I have one too) shouldn't have anywhere near a one-second delay, and your new rifle should have a much faster ignition than your Bess...  You may have some issues with the bevel of your flint, or how it's mounted, or (quite commonly) with how you prime the pan.  If you're using any of the modern synthetic powders, those will cause ignition delays and problems with a flintlock as well.  If you haven't already done so, switch to real black powder.

Your accuracy at 250 is how good?  What type of groups are you getting?  With what type of projectile and powder?  Doing that good with a poor-performing lock???  And what type of sights?  I can't see the front blade, but if it has a bead along the top it should completely cover a garbage can at 250 yards, which isn't conducive to pin-point accuracy.

It's not a widely-known fact, but a well-tuned flintlock can actually have faster ignition than a percussion lock.  The hype over slow-ignition is due in large part to poorly-loaded firearms in historically-themed movies (I loved The Last of the Mohican's, but it had some very inaccurate portrayal of the firearms of that period.  Over-primed pans and silk patches, for example).  As far as challenge...  As someone who shoots flintlocks competitively, the difficulty of accuracy with these weapons is radically over-stated as well.  It mainly comes down to how it's loaded, the components used, and just plain good shooting form and technique.

As an example, here's a real-time clip of one of my flintlock's showing a more-realistic ignition sequence.  I have it in slow-motion too if anyone's interested (1/2 and 1/4 speed).

Yeah, the low tolerances are what make them durable. I'm starting on the commie guns for that very reason. I don't have to have absolute perfect maintenance in order to not do permanent damage, which is important because I'm still learning about gun cleaning and maintenance, etc, and I don't want to use the wrong type of lubricant, go to the range and have an FTF.

As far as yours jamming was it an AK? Or was it a cheap WASR-10. The WASR-10s are, from my research, the lowest quality you can buy.

I had a lot of fun with this baby too!

Built it from scratch, apart from the barrel which was made by a friend of mine.  It fires 1" balls, weighs about 80lb.  1/3 scale of a civil war 6# gun.

Smoothbore, so accuracy isn't superb.  It's capable of hitting water-filled garbage cans out past 300yards though, which is a hoot!  It'll put a softball-sized hole in a tree at 200yards.  We also played around shooting 10 or so .50 lead balls out of it at a time (at water-filled metal buckets, mostly).  And frozen hot dogs, a fishing lure, "C" batteries, and a few other experimental projectiles.

Alas, I dreamed of building another (better) one, so I sold it a few years back.  I made most of the metal parts on my forge.  My next one will have better, dished, wheels.  I'm going to build a limber for it right away too.

A friend of mine had a German MG34, configured for semi-auto fire only.  However, it was having "issues" and every couple of trigger pulls it would rip off a half-dozen to a dozen at full auto.  Ain't nothing brings a smile faster than an MG on full auto!

Everything about that Eagle was big :aok  Just out of curiousity, you guys even use the 30mm pod?

Your warmly welcome.

This is a legendary WW2 weapon here in Finland.

(edit)

This is a very very well known WW2 movie in here. It shows how the fins were dealing with enemy trench's by using Suomi KP and grenades.

No, it was an AK.  Apparently those types of jam's are fairly common, I don't own it though, so I can't comment on how much it happens from experience.

MK19......AT4........M2........Pistols in general.......all other guns.

Thats my order :) live AT4s......nuff said :D

Oh that ma-deuce is a blast, just point and push the button.  Probabley my favorite all-time gun I have ever shot-but-will-most-likely-never-have-the-oportunity-to-shoot-again.

My personal favorite is skeet with my dad's over-under 16 guage, my favorite shotgun guage that is unfortunatley on the verge of extinction.  We have an agreement in his will, he gets to be buried with his 12 ga. if I get to keep all the 16s.  :D
