Where Did All of Our Fleets Go?
« on: January 08, 2011, 02:07:48 PM »

:huh  I was in a silly mood today, so I was just wondering, "Do the fleets carry on their 3 hr cruise during the new map resets for off hour and split arena caps?"  I suspect that they don't, but sometimes it seems they do.  When I log in and find fleet after fleet sitting next to a tropical island.  I used to be surprised to find that in each case that island had full ordinance enabled, shore batteries and radar towers fully functional, and a Skipper yelling at the crew attempting to launch from the deck, "Don't UP!  You will give away our position!"

I think this is a remnant from the day when the only field captures were of Ports, vehicle bases, or from combination NOE or LVT invasions.

I sometimes get overly annoyed at the poor fleet management and the failed beach landings.  My dad landed in Normandy, part of the invasion forces, and due to the countless sacrifices of many of his fellow soldiers he is with us today at the age of 85.  In fact, at the time of his landing, the dangers from the sea and craft they were landing in were greater than the enemy threat.  That was due to the planning and execution that annihilated the defending forces and confused their ranks and routes of reinforcements.  I know, I know, I am talking about an actual plan here.  But in a strategic 3 sided chess team play game, maybe a certain Ensign shouldn't be allowed at the controls.

Here is an option, if anyone else thinks that it is worthwhile.  Allow beach landings from LVTs at specific spawn points once a fleet is within a certain range of the bases defensive perimeter.  That will keep the fleet from having to beach itself, in order to land troops or  supplies ( yes, I know, folks will use it to magically fix downed field guns in seconds.... but that is already happening).

Uhhh.  You don't have to beach the fleet to launch LVT's.

I think it's a seeing what you are shooting at issue.  How can you shoot the field and town with the fleet guns if you can't see what you are shooting at?

"Building Destroyed" just doesn't cut it sometimes.

Hope this clears my original thoughts up a little.

Fleets are limited resources and can be lost.

Fleets are valuable assets to a country.

Fleets offer a historically flavored Naval aspect to the game play.

Fleets are extremely vulnerable to "gamey" NOE LancStuka tactics.

Fleets need to be in a certain difficult to determine position to land LVTs close to a coastline.

LVT's top speed in the water is 12 mph, Mr. Magoo  can find one swimming with ease.

Questions?

Is there possibly a better way than rank to manage the fleets?

Should it be necessary for fleets to be as close to the coastline to effectively launch LVTs?

Do the fleets continue to move along set course when the map is stored for the reset?

If I understand correctly everything is frozen in time till the next use.

That is unless the carrier runs into a fog bank and is transported back in time. :D
