RC Sailplane Question
« on: January 17, 2011, 10:46:32 PM »
Any RC Sailplane guys...

Several years ago I built an Airtronics Oly II and Oly 650...between crashing them and moving a few times they are toast...

Unfortunately Airtronics is OOB and neither of these kits are available anymore...

I want to build the old style balsa frame and monokote style glider...

Is SIG the only one left making these types of kits?

Is SIG a good kit?

I still have all the old hardware: controllers, servos and what not...just need a new kit to build...

Other than SIG, who makes a good laser cut balsa RC kit?

Oneway

edit: I like slope soaring...not high starts or electric nonsense

Several local sailplaners have built and flown both the Sovereign and Majestic from laser arts. I think Mountain Models is selling them.
I read it on the internet, so it must be true !

I built the OlyIII last summer, and have been having a blast with it.  I got rid of the polyhedral and put ailerons on it though.

A friend of mine bought two Olymic 650's and an OlyII last summer.  He built and is flying one of the 650's now.  He's currently building the OlyII.  I think he may have bought the last 650...

Skybench was selling them last summer.  It's run by an older gentleman, so I'm not sure how long the kits will be available.  Very nice laser-cut quality cuts.  I'm not a big fan of the instructions, but I've done a lot of scratch-building, so it wasn't a big deal.

The Olympic 650 is the plane that got me started.  Hi-starts in Chicago, slope-soaring in Montana.  In MT, I replaced the wingtips with my own modified ones, and added flaps. A truly awesome plane...  I gave it to a homeless friend when I moved to WI.  He looked at soaring as a spiritual thing, and he was a good guy, down on his luck.
