Vox...
« on: January 18, 2011, 07:57:41 AM »
Pigs on the wing has been testing out Vent that past 2 weeks, some like it some dont...I love it. The clarity compared to AH is just night and day but I do understand the downsides of using an external voice app.

The reason for this thread is to ask the community and HTC if they ever thought about improving the vox? And what are your thoughts on Vent/teamspeak compared to AH vox?

I use vox everywhere.  The Checkertails use Teamspeak in FSO, and vox if necessary.  When I heard my squaddie on TS for the first time, I had no clue who it was.  The in-game vox must compress the stream and change the pitch.  You're right about the clarity, vox is a bit scratchy (or tinny) compared to TS.  Both have their place, though; no reason to pick only one for exlusive use.

The Mongrels have been using Vent for the past 2 years and I absolutely love it. The ability to have multiple channels, and to directly talk to someone, make it a great tool for a large squad during FSO or other events.

Since HTC upgraded the sound system I have been very disappointed with VOX in game. I guess my PC is to not capable of handling my old graphic settings and the new VOX requirements. The only way I can get good quality VOX in game is to turn down the graphic settings to almost the minimum. So instead I kept my graphic settings where they are (getting a mostly steady 60fps) and seldom use VOX anymore. No matter whats going on with my PC, Vent gives stellar VOX quality with no noticeable impact to running AH.

Radio back in the day was tinny.

Pure clear vox would take away from the immersion in scenarios.... my opinion.

We have been implementing stage 2 of the sound change. That is implementing a new codec that improves voice quality. Included in the next version will also be a systyem checker that will tell us if the codec Vent uses is installed on all or most systems. If it is, we will be switching to the same codec as vent.

I'm with Baumer on this one.  Takes a bit of getting used to but once you have vent down it's fantastic.  I still use range and squad in game so I have a ton of options literally under my left hand.

You guys are probably the last major squad to start using either.  We use Vent also.  Works fine, nobody has issue with it.

Nice!  :aok I like vent as well for sound quality but it can be confusing if your in a furball with people talking on range as well as another set of voices on vent.

vent uses GSM 6.10 I believe,

On our server there are 3 different levels of quality,  the default one is only as good as say teamspeak but if you put it on the highest one server side it sounds perfect.

In all the years of using it only Dadrabit didn't have the codec on his machine.  GSM 6.10 should, by default, be on all operating systems from 2000 upwards.  unless someone somehow removed them.

"How do I start my engine?"    :noid

Starting Procedure
Have prop pulled through, with ignition
switch OFF, if plane has been idle more
than 2 hours.
Generator and battery switch ON, unless
battery cart is being used, then battery switch OFF.
Open throttle 1 inch.
Mixture control in IDLE CUT-OFF.
Propeller control in INCREASED RPM.
Supercharger switch in AUTOMATIC.
Carburetor air control in RAM AIR.
Turn ignition switch to BOTH.
Fuel shut-off valve ON and fuel selector
valve to fuselage tank (if full), or Left
Main tank if fuselage tank not used.
Fuel booster pump on NORMAL, check for 8-
12 pounds of fuel pressure.
Prime engine 3 to 4 shots if cold, 1 to 2
if warm.
Clear the prop.
Lift guard on starter switch and press
switch to START. Caution in use of
starter not to overheat.
As engine starts, move mixture control to
AUTO RICH. If engine does not fire after
several turns, continue priming. WARNING:
When engine is not firing, mixture control
should be in IDLE CUT-OFF.
Warm engine at approximately 1300 RPM.
Check for constant oil pressure. If no
oil pressure or low pressure after 30
seconds, SHUT DOWN engine.
Check all instruments for proper readings.
Check hydraulic system by lowering and
raising flaps; loading 800-850 pounds and
unloading at 1050-1100 pounds.
Check communication equipment for operation.
Uncage all gyro instruments.
Check both LEFT and RIGHT MAIN and FUSELAGE
fuel systems by rotating fuel selector
valve with booster pump switch in
EMERGENCY. Check for 14-19 psi. If drop
tanks are installed, check fuel flow by rotating fuel selector control.
