What would you want...

If you were in the armed forces for US, and you were stationed in Afghanistan. What would you want in a care package ?

I am asking because my class is sending a care package to the troops sometime in March... Figured I would hear the opinion of the AH Community...

You could do something unique and have each classmate buy a cheap playstation 2 or 3 game and toss it in the package.

I'd guess the girls and guys opening those packages would welcome extra entertainment ... and stuff to use for trade should they not have access to a PS console.

... but i'm sure people who've been in the military that post here could give you a better idea.

There are also a bunch of guys on Aces High that actually have served over there. They would be the people to ask...

If you can find out where most of the troops are from (we did this one time); you can send them sports magazines about the local teams.

Think of stuff that will remind them of home would be my guess. We actually had a person send peanut butter and get a thank-you letter back.

when I was shipping care packages to Iraq the favorites were
powdered drink mix
beef jerky
snuff
smokes
books / magazines
and (two things I don't recommend anyone sending)
'mouthwash'
'pringles'

guys that have been there know what I'm talking about.

Dich has a good list there to start with, it's general everyday things that you don't think much about.  Some magazines are a hit or miss I hear because some are available to them out there and some are impossible (IE: sports illustrated is a luke-warm one (they like it but I think a few of them get it regularly out there), where popoular automotive or motorcycle magazines I've had friends write home and ask if I could send them some of their favorites).

During his first deployment there, my brother asked us to send a slingshot so he could shoot it at the local birds. Other than that he always wanted snack food that he had trouble getting over there. (I think goldfish crackers where a big hit for him) And my dad would regularly burn current tv shows onto dvds and send those to him also. Not sure if your class can do any of those, but that is what I remeber sending him.

The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

Haven't been there yet, so I don't know exactly what they get easily, but I know when I am away from home for long periods on some form of training, there's nothing I love more than a nice new pair of socks.
