Headset Recommendations?

There was a thread here I saw last week or so, but can't find now, about microphone/headphone sets. Had some recommendations, and I was going to buy one of them. Surround sound something or other, people seemed to like it.

BTW, if you see me in the arena NOT calling sixes, and being totally useless communication wise, it's because A) no headset, and B) barely coordinated to keep plane in air with both hands on stick/throttle, let alone type, and C) I'm probably busy augering.

Warty sounds like you are learning... which is good.

As for headsets the best thing I can say is get a headset that runs directly off your soundcard. I personally have the logitech g35 which is usb ported but to start off buy a inexpensive one that isn't. The only reason why I say this is beause I still get stutters when running my usb headset.

I use a set of Turtle Beach 5.1 surround sound headset with mic. Works great with my old SoundBlaster card with the RCA jacks. I've been told that the USB version works great too.

I had the turtle beach but it fell apart.  Sounded decent though. I then went to a G35, which I love, but it's startign to fall apart so I just grabbed i't cordless brother the 930, which is 7.1 as ooposed to 5.1, although it's very difficult to appreciate surround sound with headphones no matter what.  They are pricey though so if that matters almost anything will work for you..just read the reviews and dont get a real stinker!

I then went to a G35, which I love, but it's startign to fall apart so I just grabbed i't cordless brother the 930, which is 7.1 as ooposed to 5.1, although it's very difficult to appreciate surround sound with headphones no matter what.  They are pricey though so if that matters almost anything will work for you..just read the reviews and dont get a real stinker!

The common theme in these headsets falling apart here are you Doc !  You throw them things around or what?

I use that Turtle Beach HPA2 myself and love it.  The surround sound is great, they're super comfortable, and the mic is excellent.  What's not to love?  Music and movies also sound fantastic with them.  You can get them at Amazon for not too much.

I have a Logitec headset w mic, USB connector.  great stuff.  Paid $20 for it at best buy I think???

You dont really need surround sound headsets unless you have a poor sound card. The best way to go is to get the best 3D enhanced sound card you can find and then buy a rugged pair of headphones. The problem I have with either the Logitech or Turtle Beach headsets are the flimsy wire which is not designed to last very long at all but then neither is the headset.

The most rugged headset I have found in the consumer range is the Heil Proset Media Pro which can be found at around $109 (US).

The best 3D enhanced sound solution is the Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatality Champion.

The two together give the best 3D stereo location possible without going to commercial broadcast quality headphones which could cost many hundreds and do not give 3D audio by themselves.

What the HECK are you talking about?  I've had mine for years.. still like brand new.  I know two other people who have had the HPA2 for years as well with no issues.

The only problem is my cat keeps stealing the fuzzy tip off of the microphone.

I disagree about surround sound headphones not making a difference.  I've used very good quality stereo headphones in the past, but the surround sound makes a HUGE difference.  Maybe not so much as far as music is concerned, but for 3D sound positioning in AH... and other games... the difference is absolutely huge.

I've been using the Sennheiser PC166 USB for a couple of years now and love it.  Very comfortable and great sounding.  It was a bit pricey but when you add up all the logitechs I've had to replace over the years, its not that bad.

Funny thing is i got the cordless to be less encumbered and i have trackir hooked up now....lol

Sennheiser PC360 and love the things...they are the best I have ever put on my head. Yes they were expensive but I listen to music all day long while I am working and these feel better and don't get so hot that I can't stand it. The pressure they put on your head isn't over the top and seems to be just right and being a full over the ear it makes your comfort level go through the roof.
