Networking woes
« on: January 21, 2011, 07:32:13 PM »
This time my connection is not the problem. The computer is very weird. When I pull up task manager, the CPU usage jumps from 26-27-28 to 47% (I do realize that 26% is an outrageous number in of itself). If I jump to the "Networking" tab, the computer locks up for a good 15 seconds before allowing the mouse to move ever so laggingly. I cannot access the networking screen AT ALL unless brought up by task manager first. I hope we don't have a virus because our anti-virus (although Norton  :bhead ) is up to date and runs periodic scans every other day. Could it be a faulty driver? I'll post a new DXDIAG if need be.

EDIT: The game has crashed a few times in the past 2 months, maybe 3 times. This is why I think it might be a driver issue.

Does anyone have any idea? It is still a problem. Malwarebytes cannot finish a full scan anymore. I've noticed that.

Wildcat,

What are your machine specs, operating system, peripherals, etc?

I gave up on Norton many moons ago - it is a pretty big resource hog, but I don't think it's as bad as it used to be.  I just built a couple of new machines this last year and did a bit of research on anti-virus.  Tom's Hardware guide and others ranked Avira's Antivir as the best free antivirus software, and that's what am using.  It's already caught more crap than AVG or Norton ever did for me.

Did you try uninstalling Malware Byte's and reinstalling?  There are some malware that block it and other AV programs from running.  From the limited info, it seems like you have some nasty malware on your maching.  Open up your Task Manager/Processes and look for any weird programs running.  Most of the time, if you see an unknown process running, you can Google it and get some additional info on it.  If it's Malware, it's usually flagged.

Good Luck!

found it, csrss.exe
and reundll32.exe
and winlogon.exe

Trojan downloaders. I hate these things. How do I remove it without the anti-virus that it obviously compromised?

Holy hell, how did Norton miss all of them? I mean I know it sucks but still.

I keep telling you guys Norton is not much better than the viruses it is supposed to detect.  Why you guys insist on running it, is beyond me.

It really does do more harm than good.

Trust me, Skuz, I had nothing to do with it being downloaded and I'm just waiting for the subscription to end. I hate Norton. I wanted to buy Kaspersky or Avast but Pop thought he would save a buck by buying Norton from his work. :bhead

Skuz, can I do anything at all? At this point it has corrupted both Malwarebytes and Norton and they cannot finish scans.

If my computer ever got a virus, I would bite the bullet, reformat the hard drive, and re-install Windows.  It is almost impossble to get a virus/worm laden computer back to normal again.

Okay, well... Any option aside from that? I'm looking into manually removing the viruses.

Wildcat,

csrss.exe is the window client server runtime process and is a legit process IF it's running from your System32 directory. DON'T DELETE IT from your SYSTEM directory.  If it's not in your SYSTEM directory, then it's a virus in disguise.

I think you meant rundll32.exe, not reundll32.  Again, both rundll32.exe and winlogon.exe are legit programs, but some viruses/trojans disguise themself as these.  Be careful when deleteing it and make sure you are deleting the correct one.

I would manually delete Malware Bytes, download the latest version, then try and reinstall it and then run it before I delete anything.

A virus laden computer yes I would agree, but thats not always the case if you only have a few infections, and it also depends on which infection as well :p

Yes, there are a lot of "if this, then that" which goes into it.

Because I depend on my computer for my living, I have a tendency to be very cautious.  What would it say if your computer started getting viruses from us?  See what I mean?

No viruses, just some programs that were faltering a bit because Windows didn't update automatically. I checked Windows Updates and the computer is 100% fine.

Everytime I shut down my computer I have a windows update.  Is that normal or is the update not working?
