Lining Up Bitmaps
« on: January 21, 2011, 08:49:50 PM »
Ok, so here's me:   :bhead

I just downloaded the TE this week.  Spent the last few nights reading the excellent tutorials, the Wiki help articles and the readme in the install folder.  I'm using Photoshop CS3 for all my bmp editing.

I've got a really cool terrain idea.  I created the 1024x1024 bmp for the land elevations (using the middle 512x512) for a 256 mile terrain.  Created a new 256 mile project, imported the bmp and got nice landforms.  Created the clipboard map to make navigating around a little easier - the two don't quite match up; one is offset and the clipboard map location doesn't match the main editor window very well.  No big deal since it's just so I can see approximately where I am on the terrain.

Then I edit the waterd.bmp to make it easier to make the land dry.  For the life of me, I can't get the size or position right.  I tried plunking the landform bmp in the middle of the 16384x16384 file, tried scaling the land to 1024, 4096, 8192 and 16384 and nothing matches quite right.  It seems if the water map looks about the right size, it's offset from the land elevation.  As far as I can tell, all the landmasses are in the middle of each bitmap file.  I guess maybe I'll try to fine-tune the positions...

What's the trick to get all the pesky bmp images to line up right?  Why are they all different sizes anyway?

waterd.bmp = 16384x16384
gndtype.bmp = 4096x4096
elevation map = 1024x1024 (and you use the middle ###x### based on the size of the terrain you want to make)
map.bmp (the clipboard map) = 1024x1024

A square of water is 165', 16384 water squares in 512 miles.
Each pixel in the grndtyp file is 660 ft., and
it is 2640 ft between each elevation vertice.

So the bitmaps can not be the same size and still cover the same 512 miles.

Everything in the terrain is keyed off the center point of the terrain, not one of the borders.
Easy in-game again.

Cool.  Thanks.  Now off for some fine-tuning.
