A first rate education
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:00:03 AM »
I have to question the quality of my sons school when I get a gmail from him this morning.

Literal words the first period teacher told us: "Get out your computers and look like you are doing something."

Way to go teach

I personally love the California public educational system! Getting almost all classes cut, including the world class band that actually MADE the school money! It's so much fun, especially when surrounded by people who are wasting the states money, and the only reason why they are going to school is the free lunches they are given because mommy and daddy did the same thing as well and just spoil their children! It's so much fun knowing that your favorite teacher is being cut next year because the teacher with tenure won't lose their job and because of that, the senior teacher doesn't even care about teaching the students! I just love it! [/sarcastic rant]

Only 20% of high school seniors can handle material that is grade appropriate in science

This surprises no one on this board...except maybe the people from overseas who read these posts.

Yup, as long as we rank #1 in Self Confidence, there is nothing separating us from domination.

To be honest, the only thing that High School is setting me up for is getting a college degree witch is almost the same as a piece of paper, High school sets you up for college these days, and if you are not planning to go to college, the school system does not really care about you.

I live in KY and I've never had a horrible teacher, I have had ones that don't teach very well (maybe one every other year) but all of the rest of them are excellent teachers.

I'm reading but the last time I spoke my peace about a political thread Skuzzy booted me for a week. So my answer to this one, even though I have a major league opinion based on many, many years of experience is... :noid :bhead

Considering teachers in my city's education system aren't permitted to give Failing grades, we're definitely headed in an interesting direction. The excuse being used by our board of education.... "We would hurt their feelings..."

Come on bean counters, don't you realize the only thing more fun than counting a student absent is giving them an "F"?! :D

Well, I am a highschooler, and it isn't all bad  :lol

For starters, we've got some bright kids, and some kids whose relevance in class I question.  So that these kids don't hang me by my balls from the flagpole, I've changed their names.  Oh what the heck, I'll use just the first names.

Kyle: Barely passing World History II Honors, and more interested in the girls than his grades
Caroline: Somewhat better than Kyle, but still utterly uninterested

Furthermore, there's a teacher who can't even begin to comprehend how backwards his class is.  This is a computer programming class, and he neither requires notes nor looks at our code   This guy is so clueless that he sits at his computer for the full 70 minutes, occasionally yelling out "Productivity!".

There are other teachers that seem stuck up, and simply unconcerned with their responsibilites.  My Geometry teacher regularly shows up to class late and then procedes to have telephone conversations, while the class just sits in shock.

My other teachers:

Biology: Showing signs of the madness of old age (pity, she is so kind to us  :( )
French: Imagine the twisted love child of R. Lee Ermey and Velma Barfield, we're talking really messed up

However, my English and History teachers are exciting, engaging and fun, and always know how to handle a rough day in class.
