Here's a natural alternative for you.

In my native country we make a drink called Aguapanela. It is made from Panela which is made from sugar cane.

You take a chunk of this, put it on boiling water and let it boil for 10 minutes.

Serve with a squirt of lime juice if you wish.

Since it is made from sugar cane, it has a lot of fructose. It does not give you a sugar high or crash.

find yourself some protein and use the stairs instead of the elevator. A little activity in the afternoon is a good thing

The purpose of an energy drink is to jack you up, similarly to adrenaline.  If you're being chased by a dog you'll get a cold feeling in the pit of your stomach, and then start running much more quickly than usual.  The side effect is a possible acute stress reaction, shock, and amnesia.

Similarly, if you have to pull off an incredible feat of strength, drinking one of these will improve your performance for a while.  However, there are side effects, but in high-intensity situations, they are masked by adrenaline.

Side effects include, but are not limited to:
  • Inattentiveness
  • Nervousness
  • Aggression
  • Fidgeting

Again, if you really need that three to four hours of "overboost", use it.  If you don't, sleep is the better option for sustaining energy.

when i played football, our coach told us to avoid all energy drinks, because all they do is hype you up for an hr then crash ya hard afterwards.

I tried monster for a few months, ended up drinking 2-3 a day.

Like it was mentioned, I did get chest pains and my heart would race.

I wont touch the stuff now, even the smell of it.

I think that if you're needing an energy drink of some sort to keep you awake through the day, you
may want to reconsider your schedule. An extra hour of sleep makes all the difference!

That being said, Orange juice or even Cranergy (some weird cranberry drink thing, does wonders!)
both work quite well, and are far healthier. Penguin more or less nailed it.

Again, if you really need that three to four hours of "overboost", use it.  If you don't, sleep is the better option for sustaining energy.

It's worth noting, however, that one should not "over-overboost". Drinking 2+ energy drinks, or
even one energy drink within a short amount of time have prominent, temporary side-effects.
HIGHLY advisable NOT to drink more than one or two a day. My step-father relied on AMP and
Mountain Dew, he loved to drink them, an AMP or two plus two or three mountain dews for a day of work.
He eventually had a heart-attack during PT due to drinking an AMP and a mountain dew beforehand,
which led to his flight-status being permanently revoked. He was a UH-60 Crewchief/mechanic,
and he loved flying.

The point I wanted to make, don't overdo it. Know your limits, find something that works for you
without crossing the line.

5 hour energy worked great for me the first 2 times I drank it. It would have me feeling wide awake before even drinking it all. After the first couple of times I gained a tolerance and no longer got any boost so I haven't used it since.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this topic, but as far as I understand B vitamins are good and caffeine is not that bad, so this stuff it actually good for you?
B vitamin is only really "good" for you when your body really needs it.
Vit C from what I heard is the only vitamin your body will pass once it has what it needs. Caffeine alone isnt bad for you, but putting this into the mix if you dont eat right, have high blood pressure etc. will only increase the chance of problems occuring.

Its amazing that I met some people that have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, ulcers etc...and docs just keep feeding them pills like candy while they do nothing to restrict their diet. Best way to get energy is to get plenty of rest, eat right and be active.
In my teens, we used to do the vivarin thing and I stopped after an incident of passing out. My heart was racing when I came to and I swore Id never those energy things again

5 hour energy tastes great (when compared to cat piss)

Works like rocket fuel when used sparingly.

Not something I would use on a daily basis.

If you feel your energy level isn't what it should be on a regular basis, start exercising.  And if you don't trust doctor's but just want testimonials, you'll never found out for real if that stuff is bad for the body.  Only if it makes you sick or not.

The 5 Hour Energy drinks are, first and foremost, a rip off!  All they are is a basic B-vitamin complex.  B-vitamins are what your body needs to utilize energy.  The reason most people "crash" from energy drinks, pop and coffee is because the bodies B supply has run out and since most of these drinks ramp up your body's need for B you run out fast!  I have on occasion taken a supplement while drinking the energy drinks and I wont crash, I may feel funky though.

You can go to a GNC or any decent pharmacy and buy a bottle off B-complex (like the 5 hour energy is) in pill form.  You can get 100 doses for the cost of three doses of that nasty drink.  Like the 5 Hour energy they will be doses in the 3-10000% of USRDA.  Since the B vitamins are a water soluble vitamin you will basically pee out what you don't use... makes you pee an interesting neon yellow.  On days when I'm drinking a lot of coffee or anything with a lot of caffeine or taurine, et.c., I wont see any color. Helps demonstrate just how much your body needs the supplement when you are consuming these heart attacks in a can.  Plus, B-vitamin deficiency has been show to affect memory and focus.
