Another Gun thread
« on: January 29, 2011, 06:48:09 PM »
Hey all. I am a somewhat gun nut.  There are some quetions that I have for some of the forum members that were in, or are in, the millitary.
I missed the opportunity to go into the armed forces due to a baseball career, so I am somewhat intrested in some of the facts of being and inlisted  soldier.

1. Are you issued a gun that you keep the whole time in the service?
2. Do you get to accesorize your gun with scopes, red dots, grips, paint, stocks, silencers, ect..?
3. Who pays for the accesories?
4. Are there limits to what you can put on your rifle?
5. Is there an on-base gun-shop or gun-smith that you can get what you need for your rifle?

We have all seen the movies of GiI's cleaning and prepping their guns. I just want to know how close the bond between the soldier and the wepon is.  Thanks,, Tuk151

1. No
2. No
3. The military pay for any accessories you need
4. Yes, outside of specialist units you get standard kit, mostly iron sights, sometimes a scope. occasionally underslung GL but rarely
5. There is an on base armourer, but you will be told to 'go forth and multiply if you ask for any Gucci bits like tactical spotlights etc etc

1. No, you are issued a gun type normally but not one specific gun.  Like my friend uses a S.A.W.
2. YOU have to pay for any attachments that are not stock (iron sights, bipods, and so forth) with the weapon.   (What my military friends told me)
3. ^
4. I believe its your choice
5. Not sure about this one

1.  No. You are only issued a constant weapon at boot and in a combat zone/deploment. If you live in the barracks and own a personal weapon you MUST turn it into the armory.

2.  To a slight degree, yes, but only in a combat zone. Most are now equipped with the nasty acog. I prefer iron sights.

3. YOU. The military doesn't pay for ANYTHING it doesn't have to.

4. Yes. Only a moron would over accesorize their weapon. It makes them heavy and bulky. Don't get your weapon up fast, you die.

5. The armory has everything you need.

Every Marine is a rifleman. Just like the creed reads: "This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine...".
When you deploy you WILL know the serial number to your rifle and if you're a Marine, you will name her.

Really?  What kind of accessories would you pay for?  Your optic? IR Designator?  Just curious, this is new to me.  My understanding is this is all issued equipment.

Typically, you either issued a M-68(CCO), an ACOG or an EO-Tech and a back-up iron sight. usually we qualifiy with iron sight first then the optic. I agree with Marine, alot of stuff people buy is unnecessary. The only thing I bought for my M-4 was my Harris Bi-pod , which are the best.

They give you stuff for the mission (from the armory), say you're going on night ops, they'll issue you thermals or night vision.
But if you want crazy stuff (I've seen guys with scopes on their pistols), that's the stuff you have to purchase.

Unless you work for SOCOM, where you can get just about anything you may want, as long as it's in the armory....

1. You are assigned a Weapon at ur unit, it can change at any time, depending at what your leadership wants, and when you are reassigned to a different unit, you will get a different weapon

2. You can buy what you want for your weapon as long as it is approved by your chain of command. If you talk to your Armorer you can sometimes get hooked up with soem cool stuff.

3. All in all, You, nothing is free

4. up to chain of command

5. Depends on Post, Most military towns have stuff like that all over the place

Selino is correct.

In a combat arms unit you can usually put whatever you want on your rifle as long as it isn't stupid, cheap or otherwise ridiculous.  Some things are good.  Some things are mall-ninja.  You seldom see an infantryman carrying the extra weight of something that's just tacticool.
