Some possible interesting skins?
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:57:58 PM »
First off I don't know a lot about these units & I thought I would throw them here on the BBS to see if any one can add some more info.

I found some pictures on line of some interesting coloured B25C's that belong with the 3RD antisubmarine squadron. I think this was a State side squadron that patrolled the Atlantic looking for German Submarines.

Not sure of the actual colours but they seem to be mostly white in colour with a two tone look & it caught my eye.

Second one I have is the 550TH night fighter squadron this unit mostly had P-61's along with a number of P-38's. It is not well documented that this unit used lightnings how ever they did use them for night work & day time base defence.

This picture is only a partial that I found in a very old book & states that it was an all black aircraft. I posted this info on another forum that some one states based off the tail number it was a P-38L? Any ways I thought that it being all black might get some ones interest for a possible skin if that was true it being an L model.

Any ways if nothing else I would like more input if any one has any.

I would venture to say ODG and white.  If you look at the third picture of the 25, the white seems to overlap the darker color. Now based upon that scroll down to the picture of the 25 over the cemetary.  Notice that all of the trees except for the pines are missing leaves.  IMO, this may have been a photo taken in early winter, and the ODG w/ white was a winter camo attempt.

I think that the colours are for mariner units. If it was a winter camo scheme I don't think the crew would be in short shirts at that time?

ASW scheme... Similar scheme is found on the TBM in a couple variations.

It was a fairly standard scheme, however you would really need to look into the ROLE of that bomber. (like you mention) Was it a state-side coastal patrol? You don't see this scheme on B-25s much. It's usualy for naval patrols and anti submarine duties (and the like -- I'm generalizing)

It is the Atlantic Cammo Scheme.

Stolen from the interweb:

Quote
The 2 Atlantic schemes ( including the Caribbean) were generally referred to as " ASW Schemes 1 and 2 "; the Specification was SR-2e ( 21 June 1944)....
Scheme 1 : Dark Gull Gray 621 uppers, Light Gull Gray 620 side surfaces, Gloss White 511 below.
Scheme 2 : as above but Non-Specular Insignia White 46 (later 601) replaced the LGG on sides.
No. 2 was more common; these were on land-based patrol bombers PB4Y-1s and PV Venturas).
Carrier aircraft on Atlantic escort carriers ( F4F, FM, SBD and TBMs) same schemes .
Some OA-10s were finished with Insignia white top surfaces, gloss white underneath; in line with early Canadian amphibians over the North Atlantic.
The ASR squadron (in Eighth AF ) had a few operating from E. Ehgland.

FTJR has expressed some interest in doing one of the B25's. Right now he is doing some projects on his job & is tied up for a while. So I think he has dibs at this point. If any one was already working on one of these skins or thinking of doing one you may want to touch base & work it out amongst your selves.
