Power Supply Issue

Power Supply....incase you haven't followed...I believe i had a Grafix card issue, got some advise on re-compounding the heat sink..due to weather,,i had to put off getting some so i thought i'd clean the fans while i waited,,,took all the fans out, one at a time and cleaned them. then the power supply.screwed everything back together, made the few connections that i had to disconnect, get the card compounded reattached,, hooked it all up,,,grinned real big, hit the "POWER" switch and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,nothing.  Ideas?

I just checked 2 of the 4 pin connectors coming strait out the the power supply...nothing, shouldn't these have constant power since they don't run thru the motherboard?

assuming you put all the wires back in the right spot again. And since you said you tested wires comming from the PSU. Odds are the problem is between the wall outlet and the wires leading out of the PSU.
And assuming no fans or lights are comming on when you try to boot.

Hopefully, but in all likely hood. Your worst case scenario might be a bad psu.

Sounds kinda silly but by chance does your box/PSU have an on/off rocker switch on it? I'm talking about the switch in the back of the machine not the power button in front. Most do. Like the black switch n the picture below. You might have simply turned the switch to the off position when you were cleaning it. certainly wouldnt be uncommon.



also silly but not uncommon, did you remember to plug the thing back in again? I damn near had a heart attack once wondering what the hell I did wrong before I remembered that I had unlugged it from the wall as well as removed the cable from
 the PSU Another time I discovered I didnt fully plug the power cord back int the psu.

Unlikely, But did you change the voltage switch position on the PSU when you cleaned it? (That little red thing in the pic above between where the cord plugs in and the on/off switch)

checked wall socket first...then tested cable (tested pos, for 110) re-opened case to make sure i didn't cut a wire , replaced cover,, plugged it all back together, tested 2 of the 4 pin leads coming out . no fire.I worked rocker switch both directions testing for fire, no voltage switch.I just find it hard to believe i fried it taking the fan loose to clean in and sucked dust bunnies from box.

I think the sticker that says" REMOVING VOIDS WARRANTY) that hides a screw is pressure sensitive.

Did you make sure the case switch is wired to the MB PowerSW position? Also check the 20 (24) pin connection to make sure its seated well.

Also make sure the video card is seated firmly in the socket.

Perhaps its was your PSU all along giving you your issues. I see you were also having Vid card problems just prior.

My monitor just died the day before yesterday. For a couple of days before it was acting weird where it didnt want to power back up after going into hibernation.
Then one night I just decided to power it down when I went to bed instead of just letting it hibernate.
That was the last time I saw a picture on that monitor. I get a light that flickers on but no picture.

Point being. Maybe you didnt cause it. But your prior problems were an indicator that something was wrong. and the last time you powered it down just happened to be the last time.
If your not getting any juice at the leads. Obviously your PSU isnt working. I too doubt that your clean out had anything to do with it.

Odds are thats all it is. Which if thats the case is good news. Unless you were all amped up to get a new Vid card. LOL

If so. too bad you dont live here in NJ. I know a place where you can get really cheap used PSUs that would tide you over or at least you can pick up to test your system with.
Check around. You might have a place like it near you that builds PCs and sells parts. Not intending to sound racial, at least in a bad way. They are often owned by an oriental guy in a store that looks like its part PC parts store. Part junk yard for old PC parts. They usually sell new parts for way inflated prices. But their used stuff is often pretty cheap and will often get you by in a pinch.

ohhh yea. intended to mention those in my original post and forgot. But he also has stated he's not getting any power comming out from the PSU.
Which kinda leaves the rest a moot point

unplugged 24 pin supply, reseated it, switch connector is in the correct "switch" position. (white being common/ground) video card firmly set.I know it's a "no no" but i thought it could be the push button switch, so i jumped across the two terminals where the switch connector goes, no effect.

Its not a no no. Thats how its tested. 

Seems your PSU is toast.

I'll hit up the IT guy tomorrow, see if he has one laying around i can..."borrow". And why would anyone get hyped up about getting a new uberlicious, give me warp9 Scotty or we're dead, super duty deluxe video card??

It wont be but 5 or 12 volts and maybe as low as .05V at the case switch. Your IT guy might be able to test the PSU so take it in and ask him to scope it for you. If he says "say what?" ask him for a loaner.
