Damage Model
« on: February 08, 2011, 03:27:51 AM »
Apologies if this has been discussed before,

Would it be possible to make the WW2 Plane's damage model as extensive as it is for the WW1 Planes?

Would increase the realism imo.

Like, ya know, when that thing that makes you move, it has pistons and things, When your thingamajigy is providing power, you do not hear other peoples thingamajig when they are providing power.

Too bad it hasn't happened yet with the planes that have came out since.  No idea if it has to be an all or none deal though.  Shouldn't be considering we have AH1 planes mixed with the latest & greatest, which is "different" by itself.

Would the artwork have to be edited for each individual plane to match up with the new damage?

Probably yes......  If the damage model goes more advanced, each type of damage needs to be displayed correctly so it's a ton of work for each plane/vehicle......  And there's about 100 of them.   :uhoh

If you mean, will you get parts of wings blown off, see-through damage and the like, the answer is NO.

What we will get is more detailed damage models, but the visuals for WW1 planes are unique to the WW1 planes. That will not be transfered to WW2.

To answer the second part, any plane that would theoretically have this added (theoretically) would by nature require new default graphics for all parts. There is an added element of bitmapping require to "alpha out" the damaged areas. Skin editing on WW1 planes is more intricate than on WW2 planes.

Do you mean to say it's currently more intricate?  Since the WW1 arena was announced as a testbed for the new damage modeling it seems likely that we'll see similar damage for the WW2 aircraft in the future.

It's a test bed for adding more components (i.e. more than "inboard, outboard" for a wing) but not for inclusion of the graphics element.

We've seen this already with separately-destructable H-stabs on WW2 planes. Things like on the B-25 you can shoot off the landing gear door and not damage the gear inside.

It's a higher level of damage detail, but that's not necessarily to say it will "look" like WW1 damage in-flight.
