Better distance measuring for SB, Naval, Tank Guns
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:21:27 AM »
In Naval gunnery distance measuring (DME) was down to a science.  In AH it is little better than yelling "MARKO!" out to the enemy and waiting for the "POLLO!" return..  The gunners did not have to constantly adjust via fall of shot in determining distance, there were dedicated range finder positions on the ship.  Here is an idea: have one position on the ship that can be manned that provides distance to target measurements.  That way when a ship is in combat somebody can get into the position and call out ranges.  If the ship is struck in the correct spot, then that position is knocked out then the gunners would have to adjust for themselves.  But when the DME position is still intact it can be used.

Alternate.  If it is determined that nobody would want to man the DME position (I definitely would, but anyway) then make it that as long as the DME position was viable, the main guns would have a distance marker above the target, much like the aircraft gunnery does.

The same goes for the SB.  Have a small box near or on top of the SB that is destroyable that provides DME.

I would like an editable tank main weapon gunsite.  Granted some of the gung-ho tankers out there will say...practice, practice, practice for getting used to aiming in the site and adjusting distance, but is there some reason that this capability is left out?

If the SB or Naval guns also had an editable gunsite then the DME wishes above could be avoided.  Range determination by mast-head-height could be incorporated in a custom site.

How about a simple split-image rangefinder, like the focus function on an old SLR still camera?

i just want to see historically accurate tank sights... they have range values..at least in German sights if a tank fits in a particular circle its that far away
