droop-snoot 38s?
« on: February 15, 2011, 02:31:08 PM »
does anyone know how successful these were? basically they were P-38s fitted with a glass nose and a bombsight, and the idea was to mark targets for other P-38s to drop on.

Successful in what way?  Did they perform their jobs successfully?  Then the answer would be yes, they were successful in the pathfinder role.

If you wanted to try the idea out, you can, more or less, simulate it with a Mosquito Mk XVI in the Droop Snoot role.

works in game, a while back a few of us loaded some bombs on 38's and flew formation with a B-25C lead and dropped on his command, got decent coverage on a town if I remember right (was back on the old town layout).

Since the P38 is my favorite plan (I fly it almost exclusively), I've always thought this would be fun to do sometime.  Drop the bombs, devastate the town, and now you have a bunch of fighters ready for the furball.

Interesting!  So they would just pickle their bombs in level flight while still in formation?

Not bad... turn one bomb sight into 4...

This would be really fun to do some day in the MA... :)

Obviously, since it has guns and all

It's okay, not everyone can dogfight a B-17  ;)

A bunch of nice, fatty targets at least...
Droop snoot variant didn't have any guns, you know...

Thats what bomber formations did---not that many planes had a bombardier who could do that, several planes would drop on cue from one

If you ever got online you'll learn what happens when you try and dogfight in a B-17 or you can ask Tyrannis what happens.  :devil

we've done the exact same with Beefcake calling the drop in the pathfinder 25C - worked great :aok

a mossie XVI and some VIs would work well too, or a 25C and 25Hs :)
