I recently ran across this game called Dark Wind. It is very reminiscent of the old Car Wars from Steven Jackson games. It is turn based vehicle combat with real time management of your gang. While a subscription is not required to play, subscribing does open up more features. Another thing is the community is extremely mature, both in attitude and age. The player base is extremely helpful to new players; offering advice, gear, vehicle chassis and game cash with little thought to getting anything back other than another person to play with/against.
So, if you're a Car Wars vet or are looking for something casual this game can be the answer to both.
