Did I HO?
« on: February 19, 2011, 05:10:08 PM »
Well, I got the infamous irate PM...  Accused of HOing...

I, of course, don't believe that I committed "the" sin in this case, although I will admit to having sinned in the past.  I'm interested in the opinion of the peanut gallery.

Here's the film, trimmed to include only the engagement for your viewing ease.

not from where I'm sitting looked at it from your seat and his *shrug*

Edit: I define a 'HO' when somebody flies straight at me guns blazing.  In a knife fight in the millisecond you have to make a decision to or not to pull the trigger I don't consider a frontal shot a 'HO' that falls under 'it happens'.  While your situation was a turning engagement I wouldn't call it a knife fight nor would I call it a HO.  Boy should have bugged out when he was outnumbered.

I didn't look at the film, but quite frankly I'm disappointed about all the whining that goes on during combat. A HO is gonna happen from time to time, whether it is intentional or not...who cares.

If that was a HO, why did he never get you in his gunsights?  :lol

I had two HO incidents yesterday:
1) My engine got shot out, I dove to the deck to get some speed.  Guy is closing in to finish me so I make a last ditch effort and turn back into him.  I'm stalling out (from lack of working propeller) and shoot as he closes.  I don't know if I got a hit but we ended up colliding.  Apparently I was HOing him and I rammed him (somehow the guy with the working engine got rammed by a lower, slower, dead stick plane.  :huh

2)  Saw a Mossie about 3.5 away from me, I was flying a Hurri2D... knew right away we were doing this.  I usually try to avoid the HO, but I knew he wanted it and I was hoping a big bullet might catch him, too.  :rofl  Pings on both of us but unfortunately we both need some more gunnery practice as we both flew away relatively unscathed.

Best thing to do when someone accuses you of HOing is to laugh at the fact they are sitting home upset over your cartoon plane.

Everybody HO's
« Reply #10 on: February 19, 2011, 06:59:33 PM »
Everybody HO's I went on a 3-month chivalry spree where I vowed not to HO, and try to maneuver out of a Head-On snap shot.  I would not take the first HO and sometimes the guys
wouldn't HO on the first pass. If they did HO on the first pass, then the second time we came Head to Head I would let the lead fly for a face shot.  Inevitably, the temptation is too great even if they
resisted the 2nd pass the 3rd head 2 head pass they would almost always, somewhere above 90 some odd % of the time, let the lead fly.  EVERYONE DOES IT FROM THE BEST TO THE WORST sticks. I've
been on the bad end of a Face shot from many, many well-thought of sticks, and if you can get away with a HO and are willing to take the risk involved, then squeeze that trigger like your life
depends on it.  If anyone gives you grief about it, just ignore them and motor on in your cartoon plane. Unless of course you are dueling with another and have laid out a pre-defined set of
ground rules, but if anyone tells you they don't HO...your naive for believing them.

I agree.  The only reason I posted the film here is because my accuser was so thoughtful to tune a channel directly to me and lay into me for HOing him.  I thought the least I could do was post the film and let others decide if I deserved his rage or not.

That, and I so rarely get someone who is mad enough at me to send a PM like that...  Well, honestly, I was feeling a little proud and thought I would share.

Exactly..

If I HO someone accidentally I do not feel good about it but it does happen.  A couple of months ago a buddy of mine did it to me.  I didn't then nor now think less of him for doing it.  He had a millisecond to make the decision and I have no idea what his front end vs my front end looked like.

As I said above there is, to me, a large difference between someone who is taking the front quarter shot that's presented that looks like a HO on my end and a guy that just dives face first into me guns a blazing.

As one of the worst pilots in the game my answer is 'fly better or don't grouse'

HOing is simply part of the game.
