Bomber Gunning Question
« on: February 22, 2011, 12:23:40 PM »
Is there a specific reason why bombers can only have one gunner?  Some of the most fun I ever had in Air warrior was taking up deathstar b17s fully loaded with my squad.  It's difficult for AoM's JuH88 to be fully manned with the current arena settings.

My guess - it is only a guess.....

Since guns are very potent on bombers, having multiple players may take its potency to the next level.

Could you imagine if 999000 had 3-4 others with him?  :bhead

People also seem to forget the myriad of issues with upping a Deathstar.  It was a pain in the bellybutton to get a full Deathstar going without having people not being able to join the crew or the constant discoes when someone did join up or lag and warps.

I believe Hitech himself said that we could either have deathstars, or all guns converging, but not both.

It was one step further. Deathstar or formations. One or the other, not either or.

Also, no gunners joining and you had no gunners. Period. You couldn't gun your own bomber.

If a gunner bailed or died, he took his ammo with him.

The biggest plus to what we have now is you can at least gun yourself.

I do believe that if you have a gunner on board and he moves to a drone then you can effectively have two gunners.  I may be wrong but I seem to recall being able to do this.

From the horse's mouth ...

The choices.

1. How often would all stations maned.
2. How important is it to see where the gunners are shooting.
3. How important is it to be able to quickly jump to a position.
4. Would a formation of 7 groups be better and more usefull than 1 full bomber.
5. How much extra band width would be needed to handle each station.
6. How much extra memory to be able to keep track of each gun.
7. How to handled unmanend guns.
8. How complex would a system be to have multiple gunners handleing multiple guns.
9 . How to hand off ammo loads when some one leaves.
10. How long would this system take to write.

In the end I looked at all of these questions, and decided it wasn't worth the few times you actulaly load up a bomber with gunners.

HiTech

It is not worth what you give up. In that other life you were talking about how often was a bomber with out gunners at all vs a full load of gunners.

There are drastic differences how ah gunners work vs the old AW system. Such as I do not belive AW showed tracers.

The things you would give up, is controlying mutliple guns with just 2 on board. Seeing tracers from the bombers, ability to jump around instantly.

I agree with you is was fun to load up a bomber on occasion, but it realy didn't happen very often, so the tradeoffs just made it not worth it.

HiTech

Ahh those selective memories of AW are way off base. Ask yourself 1 question. Of the bombers you shot down and were used for bombing, what % of them had at least 1 gunner? They were so rair that you would be surprised if you were attacking a bomber, and it shot back at you. They are so incorrect in only remembering the fun time they had, they forget all the problems. Traveler even thought you could gun your own, which was never the case.

Also ask yourself what %  sorties in AH in a bomber have a gunner?

The real simple FACTS are , all though fully maned bombers where fun. It was very rare to have one, and made bombers used much less because there was no other option. The option of having both in AH has large trade offs in concerning how to control multiple guns, the extra data used in sending the shooting guns, the lag of changing positions in guns.

current setting is 2 muppets per formation or single. there are four spots on the ju88. how many less muppets are in grizz's ju88 that hitech needs to add?

4 muppets - 2 muppets = 2 muppet spots that hitech needs to add on ju88
