Distance on the Horizon for ships
« on: February 25, 2011, 03:09:42 PM »
I tried searching this but didnt see anything (might have looked in the wrong places) and I may have posted it in the wrong forum but here is my question.  From the tower of a CV or the gun position of a CV or a CA what is the distance to the horizon?  Example the other night I was in the cruiser gun and good see the outline of an enemy CV group on the horizon.  It took me a bit to range it but finally got in there.  But it made me wonder if the distance was a constant such as it is in real life?  Or does it not apply in the game?  Is it constant or is it variable in the game?  Just curiosity because if it is a constant it in my mind makes naval engagements at distance easier to range.  Any info or feedback is appreciated.

Good question.  I'm guessing around 20k for ship guns.  Just a guess from firing at other task forces though.

Thanks guys!  I was thinking in the lines 0f 20-25 miles but if 18 is it that makes sense.

   = 31600 yards.

What range were you finally hitting at?

Distance to the horizon from the conning tower of a Yorktown class cv is 21.7k.
Distance to the horizon from the flight deck of a Yorktown class cv is 17.3k.

Over the horizon isn't modeled but fyi you can see a mast of another Yorktown class cv from the conning tower at 49.6k without giving any consideration for light refraction.
