F4U-IC Default skin.
« on: March 03, 2011, 03:47:59 PM »
I would like to change our current default skin that we currently have from

This.

To this.

Why this one?

Well lets start with this photo to help explain it.

Yes it is the only one painted in this manner no other. So why change it because of that? In part since this very same aircraft is shown on AHII'S Wiki site http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/wiki/index.php/F4U-1C  I think it should also be shown in the game in part for that reason.

Plus a tri colour aircraft that is a one of a kind & since the default skins are mostly non descriptive so you don't know what squadron or what group they are associated with this would make a perfect default skin. Also keep in mind only 200 of these aircraft were produced so any variety of skins should be a welcome change as these aircraft are very hard to find information on in regards to photo's.

To the question well did it see combat?

Based off of the above information I would say yes. With who & where?

Who knows also a good reason for a default skin.

A few more pictures of this aircraft.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

I THINK the ahwiki is user-submitted content and not controlled by HTC.

I THINK that a skin that never saw combat isn't allowed in-game.

I THINK it's a bad idea.

Those are my thoughts.  :aok

How do you arrive at it did not see combat? It has shipping numbers on it. I don't think they would freight it to the pacific & let it sit.

Has our current default skin ever seen combat? I don't know it has not got a squadron listed to verify if it had or not.

See the thread on the F4u4 skin in skins forum.

Just because it had something on it in preparation for ferry duty doesn't mean it was kept that way.

Also I seem to recall this was brought up several times over the years. It's been discounted as far as skins go.

Did anyone notice the Rear Canopy Head armor plate to be "Non-Existent" in the actual photos of this F4U1C?

I am all for this being the default skin  :aok

I would also wish/request the ingame Rear Canopy Head armor plate (over the head oval shaped head armor)  be redesigned/removed and to be more in reason with what is pictured in these photos  :aok

In the case of the CHOG I think I can make that argument. I have an entire squadron of chogs photos on file with those numbers still on & in use for almost the entire war. It just depends on what squadron they ended up in. The f4u4 I can bend on that one.

if its the default skin, doesnt it make sense to choose a scheme which was most commonly used, rather than a one-off?

Folks have brought it up before. If you've got proof feel free to share it. Wouldn't be the first time you brought something new to the table. However, as hazy as my memory is I recall it was not a combat paint scheme.

Had not noticed that with the armour plate. Going to have to bust your bubble though every other picture I have of CHOGS shows them with it.

In regards to combat with shipping numbers on chogs or are you talking specifically about the tri colour chog?

You could say that for the most part yes.

With a few exceptions they are all mostly just plain blue. So since the default skins are non descriptive as far as unit affiliation I thought the tri colour may be the exception since only one was done this way. Plus with the shipping numbers it was packed off some place to fight I assume.

In terms of combat.

I find it very possible a craft carried the shipping numbers til the end of the war... if its role was such that it didn't need them overpainted. Training? Staging? Maintenance pool?

Have any pictures of them flying actual missions?

This squadron did see combat. Flying actual missions? Coming & going yes.

In transit on board ship.

The only in flight shot I have during the war. I think this is a later time frame as the numbers under the cockpit for this squadron did not show up until later.

Sitting in wait.

Home from mission.

Even some nose art.

Entire squadron of CHOGS.

These three photos are shot post war the paint schemes were done before wars end though. Some of them are painted white on the engine cowling & others in another colour I have not figured out yet.

I am reluctant to post these pictures as I have a skinner lined up for them already & I don't want them to be picked over before he decides what he wants to do. (Above comment is not directed at you Krusty).

Any left over I will post on the skins forum for any one else to do.

IIRC for a short period of time Naval aircraft operating over Japan had Yellow noses. Purpose? Like invasion stripes, maybe?

You see a plane flying towards your carrier from the direction of Japan. Friend or Foe? Big, Yellow nose.

Just speculation on my part.
