Ki-46
« on: March 07, 2011, 05:09:02 PM »
was thinking since the Rangoon scenario comming up has to substitute the Ki-46 for the 110C, why not add it?

the specific model i'm talking about is the Ki-46 III, which served from 1942-1944, with 609 aircraft built.

top speed 375ish mph, armed with two Ho-5 cannons in the nose

captured example with US markings

Sorry to be a total Anorak, but...

That image you posted is either a Ki-46-I (unlikely, as so few were made) or a Ki-46-II, since it still has the step in front of the pilot's windscreen.  Here is a Ki-46-III:

And only a very few Ki-46-II were fitted with a pair of 20mm in the nose and a single 37mm firing obliquely upwards from what had been the observer's position, as a stopgap effort to counter the B-29.

Nearly all of these planes were used in the long-range strategic photo recon role, and right to end of the war, they were high-flying, fast planes that were hard for the USN and USAAF to catch.

And they're flat-out gorgeous.

As mentioned, the problem is that Dinah was first and foremost a recon aircraft and vast majority was built without any forward firing armament. Ki-46-III wasn't in service in 1942 as only the first two prototypes were completed in December '42. Also, that 609-figure includes all the III-production aircraft, not just the fighter conversions. While I haven't seen the individual numbers for III-subvariants, it's clear that most of them were non-armed recon aircraft. The first armed interceptor versions (Ki-46-III-KAIs) didn't reach operational units until November '44.

As the Rangoon-scenario is based on events of 1942, the Ki-46-KAI doesn't have a place in it and a pure recon variant wouldn't have any role in AH in general. That said, I'd certainly fly the interceptor version if it would ever find its way to AH. I've always liked its beautiful lines, too bad the armed interceptor version was the least attractive of them all:

+1 - I'd fly it.  Now that we have the B-29, I wouldn't mind having a large caliber gun pointing upward to take some potshots either.
