Distracted Driving
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:44:28 AM »
In this thread: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,308385.0.html

BowHTR list the number of Servicemen killed in Iraq and Afghanistan at 5885.  That number stood out to me because its very close to the number of people killed in the US last year due to distracted driving.

"Transportation officials said in a report that 5,870 people were killed and 515,000 were injured last year in crashes where at least one form of driver distraction was reported. Driver distraction was involved in 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008."

From: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/09/30/national/main5352322.shtml

Put the cell phone down and DRIVE!

Edit: The statistics I cited are from 2008, but I heard the number on the radio yesterday and it was nearly the same.

Only 16% attributed to distraction?  Is that correct?  What was the other 84% attributed too?  Also, given that the cells are not the only distraction lets give it a high 50% of that 16%, maybe worth fixing the 92% first?

There was another fatal accident not too far from where I live. You guessed it; Someone was texting, ran a red light and T-boned someone. The idiot with the phone survived but the person he hit did not. I don't know how realisitic this idea is but just a thought. I think in order for someone to get a cell phone, both their driving records and criminal records should be taken into consideration prior to sells.

YES!!!!  And also burgers, hot dogs, news papers, radio, lipstick, make up, passengers (they could be very distracting) bla bla bla.

Funny how quick everyone is to give up rights in order to accomplish nothing.

Look past the hype the head lines and what makes a good show for Oprah and will see that only a small percentage of accidents are attributed to txting  While you are at it though, how about we make beer elegal since it is probably a bigger contributor to fatal accidents?  Or maybe the store should run a background check on you before you can by it.

although i agree...the thing is 1 is too many...before i moved closer to work i used to see all manner of idiot behavior while driving...women putting on makeup...people using cell phones without hands free devices...reading the newspaper...saw one guy in a big suv reading through a stack of papers, doing 75mph on wet roads...the list goes on.

i think ron white summed it up pretty well..."you can't fix stupid"

Last year I was walking out to my car parked on the street, a neighbor of mine left her driveway, her phone rang, while reaching for her cell that had fallen on the passenger side floor, her foot pushed the gas pedal and she slammed into the telephone pole 2 door down at about 40 mph.

Wasted the car + 8,000 for a new pole.

The best part was her getting out of the car and yelling at the pole.    :rofl

I really don't find any humor in your response, unless of course I misread it and how you had meant it. The person who was killed in the accident was in early 20s, and her child was also in the car was injured but thankfully, not seriously. Also, I've had several friends killed by a drunk driver (3 in one night alone) So tell me, is there anything  else about that you can find funny?

here's something to consider.

there is no such thing as an accident. 99.9999999% of all auto accidents are due to negligence. this makes them not an accident.

PLEASE folks.....getting personal against each other doesn't help.

This area (Central Arkansas) has the WORST drivers I have seen in my lifetime.  It's like driving in a bad Driver's Ed Film everyday.

Yes, it's now even worse with the cell phone yappers and texters---not including all the methheads.

They've tried to legislate it away (at least with drivers younger than 18) and it doesn't help.

The things they've tried to do to fight drunk driving isn't working either.

I have no answer for these problems. Yes, it is the epitome of stupid.  Yes, it happens here everyday.  They (the stupid people) have the cops outnumbered.
