for anyone that thinks it's ok to look away from the road for just a few seconds......

at 60mph, you're going about 88 feet a second, or a mile a minute. so looking away for 4 seconds, you've traveled over 350 feet.

no one has taken into consideration the actual stopping distance of the vehicle they're driving, or their reaction time to stop it. i just found this......
Braking/Stopping Distances
 MPH    Ft./Sec.    Braking
Deceleration
Distance    Perception
Reaction
Distance    Total
Stopping
Distance
 10    14.7    5    22    27
15    22    11    33    44
20    29.3    19    44    63
25    36    30    55    85
30    44    43    66    109
35    51.3    59    77    136
40    58.7    76    88    164
45    66    97    99    196
 50     73.3    119    110    229
 55    80.7    144    121    265
60    88    172    132    304
65    95.3    202    143    345
70    102.7    234    154    388
75    110    268    165    433
80    117.3    305    176    481
85    124.7    345    187    532
90    132    386    198    584
that's kinda scary when it comes right down to it.

She was driving on a permit without a licenced adult present.  She slammed an SUV into a bridge abutment at about 55 mph.

Today, they buried that 15 year old girl.

No Driver's Ed requirement.

My heart goes out to that girl's family.

Same here.  VERY sad.

It's all over the papers.

You'd think that this sort of thing would send parents to sit down with their kids and tell them about driving safety and even give them the Driver's Ed that the state says they don't need.

Evidently not.

This is a once/twice a month occurance around here and x2 and x3 during prom season and in the summer (underage drinking).

I'm gonna get flamed for this........

it's not the states place to say if or not they need drivers ed. that is something that the parents should be doing. if this poor girl was driving like that at 15, then her parents let her down in so many ways it's almost criminal.

someone mentioned that their parents used to take them in empty parking lots to teach them. that is a good idea. most everyone i know learned from their parents.
my grand pop made my brother and i drive both the 67 mustang, and the 71 station wagon in bad weather, including snow. mom used to use us as chauffeurs, since it gave us real world experience, in all traffic situations, and weather.
that is the kind of stuff missing today. had that girls parents sat with her, and talked a little about responsibility, she'd still be with them.

my brother is a little too easy on his daughter sometimes, but i don't tell him how to parent her. i will however, be sure to make certain that she's getting driving lessons from either him, or me.

all that said, my condolences to the girls family.

Should see what happens to those stopping distances when your driving a 40+ ton truck. At 55mph it takes over 300 yards to stop a loaded semi. That would be using normal braking. Add in the morons that cut in front of you while your stopping and you can see why we get so pissed when you folks dart in front while we are stopping. Do it while we are stopping on a downhill slope and you may not survive.

friend of mine used to drive for werner. he had told me once that if he was fully loaded, that it'd take him about 1/4 mile to stop from 65mph. i never really looked into it though, so i don't know if he was exaggerating though.

Arkansas (as well as many states in the south) has no Driver's Ed requirement and deaths per capita is among the highest vehicle accident rates in the nation.

My home state, Illinois (at least when I was growing up there) has state mandated Driver's Ed for each sophmore to take a 9 week class, in lieu of PE, with both classroom and in-car instruction.  It, along with some New England states, is among the least vehicle accident death rate states in the nation.  I think California also has mandatory Driver's Ed but someone here on the forums might be able to verify that.

I tend to believe their is a correlation.

When I was a kid there, Illinois had mandatory Driver's Ed for all high school sophmores taught by instructors certified through a state police Driver's Ed instructor's school.  Once the course was completed, you were given the "Blue Card" certifying that you had taken, completed, and passed the course.  The "Blue Card" had to be presented to the DMV people before you could take your driving tests.  The written was not easy, but it wasn't terribly difficult either.  The driving test was administered by a non-uniformed state trooper.  If you both got in the car and you started the car and put it into gear without making sure the trooper had his seat belt on it was an instant fail.  The driving test was extensive and there were 7 pre-announced things that had to be performed and then whatever the trooper decided you should do on top of that.  Driving test took at least 20 minutes and many times (including mine) went longer.

Therewas only one instance of a traffic accident by a student at my high school (2,400 students) and it was 2 injured and both non-fatal.  Even that got around like wildfire in the halls.

We didn't have texting and cell phones back then but it was well known that messing with the radio was taboo while in motion.

There are way too many being buried that could have easily been prevented my education.

Don't make it mandatory and no one will take it.

i can tell you first hand cap...no exaggeration...and empty can be just as deadly as loaded.

it's statistics dedalos...somewhere in a dark room some pencil pushers have determined that teenagers are more dangerous behind the wheel of any car at any speed, than a corporate executive driving a mercedes at 80mph...and that soccer mom's on yakking on the cell phone with kids in the car are less dangerous than single males between 25 and 35...and that's the information the insurance companies use to determine how much you're going to pay for your car insurance.

if you look at nationwide statistics...teenagers are at the top of the list for incidents involving motor vehicles...*diggin an elbow in your ribs*...and you can't tell me when you were a teenager you drove the way your parents told you to.

 ok...now i know for sure.

i've always given big trucks room. when i pass em on the highway, i'm generally about 5 to 8 car lengths in front of them at the closest, before i move back into that lane.
